Overview

The text provides the general pathologist, clinician and pulmonary pathologist with a framework on how to work up a case of either non neoplastic or neoplastic lung disease and provide clinically relevant information to all involved in patient care. The basic understanding of radiologic findings and what they mean or how they are related to clinical and pathologic findings is addressed in detail. The implications of descriptive and diagnostic terms as well as the criteria for diagnosis and limitations of small biopsies is explained. The new entities in lung pathology whether neoplastic or non neoplastic are defined and characterized. The special techniques of pulmonary cytopathology, immunohishemistry and molecular testing are outlined and specific algorithms for using them defined.

Purpose: The intent is to provide a concise approach to the interpretation of small lung biopsies. The book also attempts to explain the integration of clinical and radiological findings in order to render a pathological diagnosis for a limited lung biopsy.
Audience: This will be useful for readers requiring a very concise book on neoplastic and non-neoplastic lung diseases. Pathology residents preparing for board exams also could find this useful as a concise survey of lung pathology.
Features: The first three chapters are dedicated to critical background knowledge for interpreting lung biopsies, with the first chapter addressing various biopsy techniques and associated indications, and the second addressing principles of lung imaging. The third chapter covers the types of lung biopsies performed as well as potentially misleading histological artifacts that pathologists might encounter. The next three chapters explain non-neoplastic lung diseases. The fourth chapter addresses airspace occupying lesions, the fifth describes interstitial lung diseases, and the sixth chapter discusses vasculitis and granulomatous entities. The seventh and eighth chapters deal with benign and malignant tumors of the lung, respectively.
Assessment: This is an extremely brief review (approximately 100 pages) of what many consider to be a difficult area of pathology. This could be extraordinarily helpful for individuals preparing for certifying examinations or those who seek a quick review of lung pathology. The authors should be commended for offering this review in the context of interpretation of a small biopsy, but the length of the book constrains the depth of discussion and pathologists would find it difficult to use this as a primary reference for lung pathology. While the images are of satisfactory quality, the overall number is limited.
