About the Author

L. Ron Hubbard

There are only two tests of a life well lived L. Ron Hubbard once remarked: Did one do as one intended? And were people glad one lived? In testament to the first stands the full body of his life’s work, including some 12,000 writings and 3,000 tape-recorded lectures of Dianetics and Scientology.   In evidence of the second are the hundreds of millions of individuals whose lives have been demonstrably bettered because he lived. They are the more than 28 million students now reading superlatively owing to L. Ron Hubbard’s educational discoveries; they are the millions of men and women freed from substance abuse through L. Ron Hubbard’s breakthroughs in drug rehabilitation; they are the near 100 million who have been touched by his nonreligious moral code: and they are the many millions more who hold his work to be the spiritual cornerstone of their lives.

Although best known for Dianetics and Scientology, L. Ron Hubbard cannot be so simply categorized. If nothing else, his life was too varied, his influence too broad. There are tribesmen in Southern Africa, for example, who know nothing of Dianetics and Scientology, but they know L. Ron Hubbard the educator.  Likewise, there are factory workers in Albania who know him only for his administrative discoveries; children in China who know him only as the author of their moral code, and readers in dozens of languages who know him only for his novels. So, no, L. Ron Hubbard is not an easy man to categorize and certainly does not fit popular misconceptions of “religious founder” as an aloof and contemplative figure. Yet the more one comes to know this man and his achievements, the more one comes to realize he was precisely the sort of person to have brought us Scientology, the only major religion to have been founded in the twentieth century.

What Scientology offers is likewise what one would expect of a man such as  L. Ron Hubbard. For not only does it provide a fully unique approach to our most fundamental questions—Who are we? From where did we come and what is our destiny? But it further provides an equally unique technology for greater spiritual awareness. So how would we expect to characterize the founder of such a religion? Clearly, he would have to be larger than life, attracted to people, liked by people, dynamic, charismatic and immensely capable in a dozen fields—all exactly L. Ron Hubbard.

The fact is, if Mr. Hubbard had stopped after only one of his many accomplishments he would still be celebrated today. For example, with 46 million works of fiction in circulation, including such monumental bestsellers as Battlefield Earth, Fear and the Mission Earth series, Mr. Hubbard is unquestionably one of the most acclaimed and widely read authors of all time. His novels have earned some of the world’s most prestigious literary awards, and he has very genuinely been described as “one of the most prolific and influential writers of the twentieth century.”

His earlier accomplishments are similarly impressive. As a barnstorming aviator through the 1930s he was known as “Flash” and broke local records for sustained glider flight. As a leader of expeditions, he is credited with conducting the first complete Puerto Rican mineralogical survey under United States protectorship and his navigational annotations still influence the maritime guides for British Columbia. His experimentation with early radio direction finding further became the basis for the Long Range Navigational system (Loran). And, as a lifelong photographer, his works have been displayed in galleries on two continents, with the definitive body of his photographs in traveling and permanent exhibits still drawing tens of thousands every year.

Among other avenues of research, Mr. Hubbard developed and codified an administrative technology that is utilized by more than 200,000 organizations worldwide, including multinational corporations, charitable bodies, political parties, schools, youth clubs and every imaginable small business. Likewise Mr. Hubbard’s internationally acclaimed educational methods are utilized by more than a hundred thousand educators, while his equally acclaimed drug rehabilitation program has proven at least five times more effective than similarly aimed programs.

Yet, however impressive these figures, no measure of L. Ron Hubbard is complete without some appreciation of what became his life’s work: Dianetics and Scientology.  The world’s most effective force for positive change, the Church of Scientology represents spiritual freedom for millions of people the world over. They come from every walk of life, every culture and every strata of society. Moreover, when one is speaking of L. Ron Hubbard’s discoveries relating to the human mind and spirit, one is ultimately speaking of the philosophic foundation of all he accomplished: better education, crime-free cities, drug-free campuses, stable and ethical organizations and cultural revitalization through the arts—all this and more is made possible because of the breakthroughs in Dianetics and Scientology.

Read an Excerpt

Dianetics is an adventure. It is an exploration into terra incognita, the human mind, that vast and hitherto unknown realm half an inch back of our foreheads.

"The discoveries and developments which made the formulation of Dianetics possible occupied many years of exact research and careful testing. This was exploration, it was also consolidation. The trail is blazed, the routes are sufficiently mapped for you to voyage in safety into your own mind and recover there your full inherent potential, which is not, we now know, low but very, very high.

What People are Saying About This

Billy Sheehan

In the early days, I would stand with one part of my foot on the amplifier and my eyes pinned downwards. Using Dianetics technology, I became more and more freed up. I used to play one note with one finger and now there are no limits. I came out of a shell. And that happened as a result of Dianetics. I have little attention on the past now, I only have attention on the present and future. Dianetics helps bring your creative horsepower way up.
— Top rock bassist for "Mr. Big"

As with all great books, the impact of Dianetics means that the world will never be the same again. History has become a race between Dianetics and catastrophe. Dianetics will win if enough people are challenged, in time, to understand it.
— Writing in the New York Times

John Travolta

Dianetics put me into the big time. I always had the ability to be somewhat successful, but Dianetics freed me up to the point where something really big could happen, without interference.

Power of healing, a successful life, and happiness - all yours by mere thought. Sounds like a science fiction book or movie right? Wrong. It is Dianetics and it is a real science of the mind and its powers. In 1950, L. Ron Hubbard wrote about this science in a book aptly named Dianetics. The book deals with your mind and how your thoughts can affect your current state of health. It speaks of a way that you can make your life better simply by thinking about it. I read this book over the course of two weeks and it has been one of the best books that I have read in years. It did not change my life overnight, or in a week but it did make me think about things I do in life, and why I do them. It makes the reader realize that ever action leads to a reaction, no matter how small the reaction. You might be skeptical about the idea of power of thought, but even if you are Dianetics is a book that I would highly suggest reading. It will show you things about you thought processes that you never knew. I give this book a 5 out of 5 open minds. It's definitely a book to read.
— Staff Writer, Oklahoma City Community College, Pioneer

“We have around us today many problems: problems of the criminal, war, individual illness and juvenile delinquency.   We are faced with very intimate and vital problems which we are not, as a large society, adequately solving.  Dianetics has introduced into the society a technique by which it is possible to increase the potential working groups in the country.

“I would like to tell you a little more about Dianetics, its general ability to remedy some of the troubles and problems with which the community, the individual, the nation are faced.   We have quite a few things in this society today which need remedying, and we are in a little bit better position to remedy these things.

“Dianetics is a series of techniques, tested on an engineering basis, which do things with the science of thought.   You hear people say, ‘Dianetics?  This is probably just another idea.   If we sleep on featherbeds we will all be much healthier, etc.’  This is the sort of thing that has been going on in the past about thought itself: ‘If you sit with your legs crossed for fifteen minutes every morning and say, ‘Every day in every way we are getting better and better, ‘” etc.   In the past they were trying to sell this sort of thing as a substitute  for a good science of thought.   The public is very justly suspicious of anything new that pretends to do something about the human mind.

“We have reached the place where we can blow a whole town off the face of the earth, drive automobiles at 110 miles an hour and unload how many tons of weight, where, at such and such a time, but nobody has been adequately studying the human mind itself.

“Doctors know that human ills stem from the mind.   New remedies come out: ‘All you have to do is take so-and-so and life is wonderful.’  The thinking medical men, however, who have ability and who have done observations on their own, know that none of these medicines are panaceas….   With 75% of man’s ills very little advance has been made…”

“In Dianetics we demonstrate the fact that we have techniques to do away with psychosomatic illnesses.   People say, ‘Why didn’t someone know this before?  Why didn’t someone know that we could recover all our memories of childhood?

“One day I ran into a lady.   She hadn’t known who her parents were... Her parents had died before she knew them.   I took her back to the period where she could see her parents.  We found her name, what her birthday was, where her parents had died, of what they had died, etc.  She came back to present time in a remarkable state, tremendously enthused.   Interesting to me that four psychiatrists had worked on this lady and were in the audience.  Two came up and confessed to me that they had thrown this patient at me to prove that Dianetics did not work.  They had worked on her for five years and considered her the hardest patient in the area.   These two gentlemen were more courteous to me after that.

“I have received a letter from a gentleman in the Midwest who wants us at the Foundation to send him a certified auditor trained in these techniques in order to instruct the staff of an entire sanitarium in order to accomplish what they have not accomplished before.

“They did not know how thought works, what are the parts of the mind, etc.  As a consequence they could not predict how a person would react under certain circumstances.  They did not recognize that when a nation goes to war it was in a period of madness.

“Dianetics is interested in experimentation in order to increase the application of these techniques.   Our research department is very hard at work running a pilot project on a small group in order to perfect these applications of Group Dianetics.  In a few days Group Dianetics has taken an apathetic company and has brought it up to where its income potential has almost doubled.   These things are the vital stuff out of which we hope to make a larger and better future for the world.”

Why do some people act the way they do? What causes mental illness? How can you avoid 70% of your sickness and how your brain controls your health? All these answers can be found in the book Dianetics. This book tells you how your brain work, how to get more happiness in your life, why do some people go insane and how can you avoid going insane. You need to know how your mind works because you use it everyday. I strongly recommend you to try Dianetics and improve your life and others. I'm 14 years old and this book is very easy to read, after reading I understand how my mind works and how to improve my life. I would like to say thanks to Mr. Hubbard for writing this book. Now it's your turn to improve your life and live happier.

If you believe anything written in this book, you deserve to be shot in the crotch, because you are so stupid that if you reproduce, you would actually lower Homo Sapiens' chance of survival.

I am so glad that I read Dianetics, it answered so many questions for me about why people do what they do and act the way they act. I read it a second time and found even more information about myself. It is an incredible book that can really help.

I thought of reading this book in order to find peace with myself, but as I got more into it, I felt like i was reading science fiction. This book reminds me of Heavens Gate Suicide Cult, in fact this my appear to be a cult like book too.

Before you buy this book and fund Scientology, please just google: David Miscavige. Or look him up on youtube and see what you get. It's a lot of awful abuse of people and testimony of ruined lives. This guy leads the Church of Scientology and he's a bad, bad guy. Don't buy this book, please.

This book was fantastic. For anyone who wonders if it is worth buying and reading the answer is a most emphatic, "YES". It's a best selling book for a reason and that reason is that it works. I can say that from personal application. Don't just read it. Use it. Live it.

On my quest to find the truth as to why a lot of my friends are calling scientology a hoax and cult could be summed up in this book. By reading the book from front to back provided me with no positive results. I wasn't happier, I didn't do any better than usual at the workplace and I still have the same fun with the same friends. In retrospect, I'm actually mad that I wasted time to read this book which is a load of pseudo-science. I suggest to all who are interested in this book to stop what you're doing and change your life by asking for help from others. Your friends and family will help you because of the decency that exists in all human beings. Don't be suckered into buying something that shows no positive results and just use some common sense to enjoy life. It's really not that hard.

Do not buy this book. L Ron Hubbard thought he was creating a religion but now after his death it has become a cult that brainwashes practioners. It is a farce concocted in the mind of a science fiction author. To hear about the abuse by higher leaders of the organization of Scientology churns your stomach. There are better self books out there. Walk away from this book.

I regret throwing away this book. This is because I tried to flush it down my toilet (a deserving fate, I know), but it clogged my toilet and I had to get a plunger out to fix it.It is filled with fallacies, tautologies, and pseudoscience galore. I gleefully pointed out the contradictions in place by the end of the first chapter, then despaired for humanity that somebody took that crap seriously.I'm still mad I wasted 50 cents on it at the bargain bin.

I have attempted to read this book no less than a half dozen times. I have never been able to make it past page 32. First I start mumbling to myself, then I start keeping tally of the number of inconsistencies and made up words....the next thing I know I am stammering and drooling with pent-up frustration at the complete psychosis that would cause words to be placed in that particular order...the last thing I remember before blacking out is jumping up and down on the book, screaming inanities (which, somehow, are more intelligible than the drivel contained within this tome).

Lather, Rinse, Repeat .... Every. Single. Farking. Time...

Look, I can read some ridiculous tripe (have you seen my library?)...but seriously, any thread of a coherent ... anything?

Anyone who reads this book can quickly see here, that in this technique explained, there is no relation to psychology as one reviewer here suggested. They will also quickly see that it is a very advanced technology that can be understood with this book. If you read it and apply it exactly as stated, one will see that it works, thus debunking someones review that it is Science Fiction. I read it in college many years ago and I see it is still in the bookstores, libraries and online sites - so someone must be reading it, lol. It's also available in video format for the visual. This is not a quick reading book. You have to read it slowly and look up words you do not understand in a simple dictionary and use the glossary in the back for special definitions. But if you are into the mind and health, you will quickly have great realizations on the material that is explained to you and be amazed at things that no one has ever taught you. You will quickly realize what society never knew or in some cases what they have withheld from you to keep your power at a minimum. If you have unresolved physical or emotional problems and no one can figure out where they come from, and no one can really resolve your issues permanently - this book has the answer and is worth disregarding the negative comments that some have written here until at least, you read it and see what the data says. What have you got to loose? If you don't like it, you can discard it. But it's quite an adventure. into understanding yourself, so Good luck.

The initial 30 page synopsis of this book won me over. I read this at a bookstore, then bought the book. Then someone mentioned I can take a course with the book. This is a book on mental health. It's a study book. I went to a Church of Scient and got the "Extension Course" ($35). I read a chapter and answer questions. It's an incredible tool on life's challenges, gives incredible understanding on "mental health", and the questions I answer are directed at helping ME improve my life. Yes, some chapters are difficult, and I just go back and reread and then I get it. It's not something to whip thru on a weekend, so enough of the 1-star drama. You're not going to read Einsteins Universe and not say the same. The pleasure and satisfaction of the book is how I feel after I understand a concept and see that I've been doing something not-optimum for decades, and I can change behavior to better myself and those around me. Yes, healthy mental health can be attained. Hubbard saw the decline of morals and ethics and in our culture in the 1950's. Yes, over 60 years ago he pretty much said, Our current civilization is going downhill, and fast. And if you don't have any concept on this, then this isn't the book for you. I have so many of my clients and friends on psychiatric drugs, and they are told by their counselors that drugs are their only option. That there is no "cure". I've learned from this book never to put a label on anyone, and putting anyone on drugs, especially children, is pure criminal. Big Pharma is creating a drugged planet, one patient at a time. As a health care provider, i'm kicking and screaming over this, as I see good lives ruined. Patients living day and night in mental anguish, and taking drug after drug. Hubbard saw this, and Scientology is well aware of this as a ruin to our entire planet, and they work hard to fight this. If you're interested in your own mental health, start here. I did. Good luck!

I read this book and started applying the procedure in the book and it totally changed my life. If you are stressed or depressed you don't have to take pills, you can simply apply the procedure in the book.

I first read Dianetics in 1977. I was 18 years old, on street drugs, no relationships, and really didn't know what I wanted in life. Dianetics helped me discover for myself WHY I felt that way and was having so much trouble. I used it and now I've been married 26 years, have two kids that are very clean, educated and productive in life on their own, and am very accomplished in my own career. It is very logical subject that explains alot and I highly recommend it to anyone who knows that they have more potential in life than they're currently living.

Although the press and media are having a field day with the whole subject of Dianetics and Scientology, i went ahead and decided to give the book a try. If i could better the conditions in my life with a little bit of Dianetics, then it would be worth my money.....and it was worth it and then some. In our world today, there seems to be a lot to handle in our day to day lives. Dianetics can help our fellow man become less insane by taking another look and evaluating for ourselves so that we may find the answers to the troubles of our yesterday(s). And although i am not a scientologist, this is something anyone should use. So give it a try. Get the book and read at least up to chapter 2. Ron is making a lot of sense.

It all began back in 1938, when author, adventurer and philosopher L. Ron Hubbard discerned the Dynamic Principle of Existence: SURVIVE! After years of further research and testing, LRH penned Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health (1950) in just under three weeks of furious typing. This book will teach you about the anatomy of your mind, and how painful events from your past are actively working to keep you from reaching your full potential. Dianetic Auditing (spiritual counseling) is the most reinvigorating pursuit I have ever engaged in. My quality of life has improved, I am happier than I've ever been, and my reading and study skills have gone through the roof. Dianetics has the potential to change your life too; all you have to do is buy this book and READ. A study of this volume alone, without doing anything else, will turn you life around. Ron does his best to make what has previously been an impenetrable subject (the human mind) decipherable by writing a book the layman can understand, but there are a number of terms you will need to learn (a glossary is provided in the back of the book) to really get the most out of it. It is TOTALLY worth the time and effort. This book has helped me, and I know it will help you. It has REVOLUTIONIZED the way I live my life! Enjoy the adventure!

After all the hub-bub in the news of scientology, I decided to check this book out. I found it to be misogynistic, bigoted, biased and not backed up with ANY scientific proof! The only thing this book helps is Scientologists lining their pockets! A dis-service to anyone involved in mental health.

Finally, here we have a full explanation of the mind. I have searched through every major philosophy, religion, and belief system on Earth and I have never seen something that works as fast and as thoroughly as Dianetics. This is what people have been looking for for a very long time. The material in this book SOLVES the problems of the mind, permanently.

OK, here's my review. I've actually read the book and used it. It is a manual that is meant to be used. Use it to help your friends and family. Joining organizations and such is not necessary. Just read the book, and use it to help your friends. What's new in the new edition? Well, nothing! The publisher didn't change anything in the book itself other than typos and punctuation errors that were introduced by Hermitage House Publishers back in 1950. In comparing the original manuscript and putting those footnotes in the back of the book, enlarging and darkening the font size, it makes for a more comfortable read. Dianetics is an alternative to psychology and outlines several basic things that can help a person help themselves (thus the phrase "self-help") as well as help others. Among the chapters in this book we find the following: The Goal of Man; The Dynamic Principle of Existence; The Four Dynamics (a dynamic is a drive upon which life is compartmented); a descriptive graph of survival (which was interesting - I never knew survival was more than "just barely making it" until I read Hubbard's definition); and the discovery and complete anatomy of what Hubbard calls the "Reactive Mind", which commands one to act irrationally against their own wishes and goals. Since I have been known to act irrationally, it's good to see what's causing it and what to do about it. It's a thick book, 491 pages of actual text, divided into Theory and Practical applications; a 5 page glossary of important terms; a chapter called Dianetics in the 21st Century that brings us up to date from those long-gone days of 1950 (the year Dianetics was published) which has reprints from the LA Star and The Daily News, which did news articles on Hubbard and Dianetics at that time. Lots of photos in this section, too. It's interesting to see what their view was. And finally, an appendix that briefly lists other self-help books by Hubbard, which are all new 2008 editions! Oh, and finally, finally, The Editor's Glossary, that gives dictionary definitions to English words as they were used in 1950 as well as specialized Dianetics terms, as they were used at that time of writing. This is real handy and makes reading the book that much more easily read. It's tough for me not to write a long review on a book that is over 600 pages thick. It has every imaginable area of human relationships clearly delineated and how Dianetics can help problems associated with these: alcoholism, post partum depression, divorces, domestic violence and drug abuse amongst them. So get this book but use Amazon's latest and greatest 2008 edition of the book, as I've described above. Remember, Dianetics is not Scientology and Dianetics is not a religion. It does not obligate anyone to just pick up a copy and read it. It is also in Tagalog, Spanish, French, German and a few other languages. Read this book.
