Dissecting Dexter A Fictional Homage
Dissecting Dexter is an analysis of the fictional character Dexter. We as a society love to cheer him on but don't want to admit to doing so. How can a serial killer, even one with a code be allowed to exist in our society? Even if this killer is one who takes out criminals that the system has let fall through the cracks how can we let him be happy in the end? An analysis of the two endings - episode twelve at the end of season eight and the ending of the first season of Dexter New Blood are included in this commentary. Anne includes other options in the story as an audience member and huge fan of the books and the series.

The thing about Dexter that is a theme throughout is he tries to solve a moral dilemma in each season and sometimes in each episode. This is about the issues Dexter has as he transitions from a young man functioning by the moral & or kill code his father taught him from an early age into being his own man. His father was so worried about a true monster that Dexter could become he never really stopped to see that Dexter had more than one dimension that he could have addressed or even seen had he been more open to his son. Dexter's father wanted to mold and shape him, doing it out of love and concern he thought. "Harry" who becomes his ghost dad and is shown as a sort of conscience for Dexter never gave Dexter a chance to fully explore or blossom into what could have been or maybe should have been his true self. One of Anne's very favorite shows she could not walk away from the series as it has been so far until she paid homage to it & then shared her thoughts. This is Anne's fictional homage to the character Dexter & the writing of the original author Jeff Lindsay and the writers of the series. Anne Penn is a True Crime author of books about the real serial killer monikered the Golden State Killer, Visalia Ransacker, East Area Rapist & Original Night Stalker, plus the infamous Zodiac Killer. Dexter is a fun, short, sometimes tongue in cheek read!
