About the Author

Elias Weiss Friedman grew up near Philadelphia, in a big family of brothers, sisters, cousins, and dogs. After graduating from Boston University in 2010, he moved to New York and held a job at a major brand strategy agency for two years. But after a round of layoffs, he wanted something more authentic and creative to take on. Inspired by his circle of friends in New York City’s startup culture, he decided to combine the two things he has loved since childhood: photography and dogs. Friedman created the wildly successful blog and Instagram feed, @TheDogist, in 2013.

Friedman, creator of the popular Dogist blog, combines his love of dogs and photography in this lively collection of over 1,000 photos. Even readers who wouldn’t consider themselves dog lovers will have a hard time resisting this heartwarming collection of smiling, barking purebreds such as pit bulls, bulldogs, and Labs, as well as adorable mutts. Each pooch portrait is captioned with the dog’s name, breed, and (occasionally) location. Friedman keeps the commentary to a minimum, wisely allowing the photos to speak for themselves, though he occasionally steps in to point out rescued shelter dogs such as the rehabilitated pit bulls from NFL player Michael Vicks’s controversial dogfighting ring. Some of the highlights include the stately Theodore James Franco Gatsby, a two-month-old French bulldog; Peppermint, the tree-climbing miniature poodle; and the solemn Bob Marley, an 11-year-old Lab. These are just a few of the images that readers will likely return to. Friedman’s style and location (many of the photos are shot in N.Y.C., where the author resides) beg a comparison to Humans of New York, but Friedman’s subject is a little lighter. Since October 2013, Friedman's photo blog, The Dogist, has documented the canine citizens of New York City in a popular "street style" format. Pictures include the dogs' names, breeds, and sometimes their ages and locations (when those are outside of New York). Photographs are grouped thematically—"Sassy," "Shaking Paws," "Ears," "Bulldogs," "Puppies"—by physical feature, breed, activity, etc. Amid the sharp dressers, show dogs, and rare breeds, Friedman highlights special cases: the "Vicktory dogs" who now live at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah; and service dog Phil, who goes by "Juno" in public to avoid distraction. While enjoying a large social media audience, Friedman also applies his background in brand strategy to help dogs in need. Through his "Give a Dog a Bone" program, people can donate a chew bone to a dog in a shelter; Friedman will then feature the animal, with adoption information, on his blog.
