Description: Part of the Demystified series, this is a review of basic math and conversions, but, unlike other dosage calculation books, it begins with the practicalities of understanding the medication order and the two most common methods of dosage calculation — the formula and ratio-proportion methods.
Purpose: The goal is to present practical information about dosage calculation in an easy-to-read style. The information is presented concisely and clearly.
Audience: The book is intended for use by nurses and nursing students. Although it contains practice questions for each chapter, their limited number makes the book better suited for practicing nurses. The author has participated in the entire Demystified series, but would not be considered an authority on this particular topic.
Features: The book initially reviews the parts of a medication order and common abbreviations they use, then progresses to actual dosage calculations. This is a practical approach for busy clinicians. Those needing a more in-depth review of basic mathematics can turn to one of the later chapters, which clearly explain the concepts. The illustrations are pertinent and do not clutter the page. A consistent format and color theme is used throughout, making it easy to skim and locate desired information. The book would be more practical for students if it contained additional practice problems and information on medication labeling.
Assessment: This is a practical guide for nurses who need to brush up on math and dosage calculation skills. It is small and concise, easy to read, and uses a consistent format. This is not a book for beginning nursing students.
