About the Author

Kenneth S. Latimer, DVM, PhD, Dipl. ACVP, is a veterinary clinical pathologist at Covance Laboratories, Inc.   in Vienna, Virginia and Professor Emeritus in the Department of Pathology at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine in   Athens, Georgia.  He has over 32 years of experience in the specialty of veterinary clinical pathology in academic, research, private practice, and industrial settings.

Description: This fifth edition of an introduction to veterinary clinical pathology uses an outline format with useful diagrams and tables that make it very easy to read. The previous edition was published in 2003.
Purpose: The purpose is to teach veterinary students, residents, clinicians, and practitioners how to interpret laboratory data. This book is an essential teaching tool.
Audience: Although it is written primarily for students and residents, the book also can serve as a reference for private practitioners.
Features: This book covers broad topics of clinical pathology including hematology, clinical chemistry, basic endocrinology, urinalysis, minimal cytology, and quality assurance. The outline format makes it easy to follow and find needed information. Many tables summarize causes for laboratory abnormalities, which are helpful for a quick review. The new edition has a few errors, however. The figure legends on page 17 for the red blood cell images are mislabeled and this will likely be confusing for students.
Assessment: This excellent book updates the previous edition, increasing information on avian laboratory data and expanding information on cardiac troponins and thromboelastography. It also includes many cases with clinical history and laboratory data that are outstanding for teaching and helping students understand the information.
