German shock director Jorg Buttgereit's follow-up to his cult classic Nekromantik (1989) is neither as sick nor as entertaining as its predecessor, and its central set-piece (involving Monika M and the corpse of Rob from the first film) is nowhere near as effective. The film gets a little mileage out of the sex role-reversal, as Monika is torn between her living lover (Mark Reeder) and Rob (Daktari Lorenz, seen in flashback), but no sick joke -- no matter how good -- is funny the second time around. In fact, the most offensive thing about this tired outing is some television footage of seals being clubbed, which Monika's party guests watch as entertainment. Buttgereit returned to form with the effectively nauseating Schramm a few years later.
