A versatile singer-songwriter with an inexhaustible gift for melody, Billy Joel is a true American original. As adept at Tin Pan Alley sophistication as he is at rock, Joel moves listeners with his poignant slice-of-life imagery, much of it taken from his Long Island milieu. This DVD shows Joel equally bold in the video arena. All the memorable moments from his conquest of music television are here. "Uptown Girl," for instance, seems at once an '80s touchstone, a '50s throwback, and a uniquely personal tribute to the beauty who was then his new girlfriend, Christie Brinkley. There's also loads of fun here, from the doo-wop flashback reunion of "The Longest Time" to the wacky, inspirational lyricism of "You're Only Human (Second Wind)" to the finger-snapping silliness of "Tell Her About It" (with a Rodney Dangerfield cameo, no less). Of course, no Joel collection could be dubbed "Essential" without his signature tune (and video): the sleek, black-and-white film of "Piano Man."
