The Mists Of Avalon

This three-hour miniseries adapts Marion Zimmer Bradley's feminist recasting of the Arthurian mythos into a big-budget cable television event. In ancient England, Christianity is spreading and the Saxons are invading. It's up to Viviane (Anjelica Huston) -- Lady of the Lake and high priestess of the kingdom's ancient pagan religion -- to make sure that the next king will honor both the old and new faiths and thereby banish the barbarian hordes. Viviane manipulates her sister Igraine (Caroline Goodall) into marrying King Uther Pendragon (Mark Lewis Jones) and bearing a son, Arthur (Edward Atterton) -- much to the consternation of Viviane's other sister, the power-hungry Morgause (Joan Allen). Arthur grows up happily with his older half-sister, Morgaine (Julianna Margulies), until Merlin (Michael Byrne) spirits him off for training and Viviane brings Morgaine to the mystical island of Avalon to develop her magical connection to the Goddess. Years later, the siblings reunite in a masked mating ritual, unaware that their union is incestuous -- or that their son, Mordred (Hans Matheson), will fall into Morgause's clutches and destroy the delicate balance that Viviane has sought to maintain. As Arthur gathers the knights of the round table and ushers in a golden age with Queen Gwenhwyfar (Samantha Mathis) at his side, the seeds of his destruction, and Avalon's, have already been planted -- by Arthur himself. Filmed on-location in Prague, The Mists of Avalon premiered on the TNT cable network July 15 and 16, 2001. Director Uli Edel, best known for his feature adaptation of Last Exit to Brooklyn, had previously helmed Purgatory for TNT. The titular mists -- developed by Edel and executive producer Mark Wolper -- utilized custom fluid dynamic software designed specifically for the project. Celtic musician Loreena McKennitt added her theme music to composer Lee Holdridge's score.

AWESOME,AWESOME,AWESOME!!! The movie has terrific acting and scenery as well. However, it's best trait is how it depicts Paganism as it truly is: an earth-loving, nature based religion that values men and women alike. It does well porteying most of the rituals in the film. Also, it shows Early Christianity. As a lover of Arthurian myth and believer in Wicca/Paganism, I adored this film. However, the book is ALWAYS BETTER!:)

I bought this DVD after my daughter told me to see the movie if I could; was originally going to watch it and then pass on the DVD to her, but will now keep it in my collection. There's a lot of history in the movie and some facts that are astonishing but overall, a lovely movie that takes you back in time, to an era where you feel "I've been here before" - kind of scary, but maybe true.

When I saw it on TNT I feel in love with the whole story. It made the old characters seem new.I wonder why no one ever thought of telling the story from a womans point of view but thats the part that was most intresting. If you have never seen this movie I insist that you do.Guys will like it because of the battle sences,Girls will like it for the romance, but every one will love the magical story.

this movie was one of the best movies i have watched in a long time. I have a passion for authurian legends and this just made it stronger. the only downside i got from it was, after reading the book, i wished the movie had more of the information that the book provided. other than that, i was entranced with the good acting and the great plot line. I also like how its seen through the eyes of the women of avalon/camelot. thanks for makin the movie!

I read the book when it first came out & loved the story. The movie is good but leaves a lot of the story out due to time constraints. If you enjoyed the movie, you should definitely read the book - what a treat!

This movie was great. I'm reading the book now but it's cool to see the characters come alive. The women are so powerful. I love watching it and some parts still leave me breathless by great acting.

I loved this made-for-TV-movie! It's about time they told the story of King Arthur and Camelot from the women's perspective. The actors were great, as was the storyline. If you liked the movie, try reading the book. It's great too, and it has a bit more information than the movie.

The Mists of Avalon is an awsome movie. I give it 5 stars.

The Mists of Avalon was an amazing depiction of the Arthurian Legends. It is much more entertaining and realistic in contrast to movies such as 'Excalibur' and 'Merlin'. Although the movie does have a great amount of differences from the book, it is still worth the 4 hours. Perhaps so many differences occurred because of time constraints. If it took 2 1/2 hours for a 300 page Harry Potter book, then imagine how much time they would need for this story. Especially since there are so many conflicts and coinciding plots. And despite what the reviewer before me said, I have read the Mists of Avalon after I watched the mini-series and I understood it perfectly well. In my opinion, it is definitely a movie that you should see.

The mists of Avalon I believ gives a strong out look on the teal of King Auther and the prople around him. The story based itself on the life of avalon and how it lived with it's priestis and believers. Making the world of magic and heros come to life.

This movie rocks!!! It has great acting and many emotions. I didn't want it to end. I will definately read the book.

i can't believe on how well it went with the pagan religion. Finally A movie that has some sence of how pagans live and how we aren't evil at all. Plus i have seen this move at least 5 times.

In my opinion, this is the best depiction of the Arthurinian Lore. Morgaine was not evil like all stories say, but she cast herself out for personal reasons. I like how they depicted Mordrid as a confused man, because his childhood was so screwy.

The movie was an 'ok' but it wasn't as great as i expected it to be. It left my favorite parts of the book out and i didn't feel that the movie was really connected much to the book. If i hadn't read the book before i was to see the movie i would not understand the movie much and i think i would feel less good about the movie as i do now. The movie is great to watch and see the likes and differences between the movie and book and also great to sit down and enjoy on a rainy day but i still give this movie only a three star rating.
