Overview

The first of three books by Spencer Harvey. Mark expects to spend a few weeks updating the software at Solar System Events monitoring. He arrives there to find that SSEM is in long-term decline and now has only one full-time employee; a girl called Robin. When the system fails to detect an incoming meteorite attention focuses on the weaknesses of SSEM. To ensure these failings are not revealed by Mark or Robin they are sent to a remote part of Russia to witness the passage of the meteorite. There they meet Gregor a Russian professor, and the three of them search the snowfields in the hope of recovering a fragment of meteorite that fell to earth. The events that follow become increasingly mysterious and dangerous as Robin volunteers for a risky assignment, and Mark wonders whether Gregor can be trusted.

About the Author

Spencer Harvey developed an interest in science at an early age and in his teenage years spent much of his spare time in a shed in the garden experimenting with chemicals and electricity. At school he had the distinction of gaining a detention for 'causing explosions' on the premises. (No damage was done). He moved on to study chemistry at Leeds University and stayed on to do research in organic chemistry. Having completed a PhD he left to work in industrial research in the steel industry and spent much of his career on the topic of radioactivity and radiation safety.
He has read widely throughout his life, including much science fiction, the quality of which seemed very variable and often unsatisfying. The opportunity to produce something less fanciful presented itself when he retired, and has resulted in 'Early Warning'. The aim was to create a credible story set in the real world and requiring minimal unknown science. A second story is in preparation.
