Description: This book is just as the name implies: taking a complex subject and making it easily understood while also fun and interesting. The updated seventh edition is important to ensure treatments are current evidence-based practice.
Purpose: The overall purpose is to teach readers the basics of ECG concepts. The author inspires all to learn what is important and remember that content while having fun. Those objectives are easily met by the concise, clear, and colorful approach.
Audience: This book will benefit all healthcare students and practitioners who need to learn ECG from the beginning but do not have a need for in-depth, rigorous electrocardiography content. The author is a doctorally prepared adult nurse practitioner and an associate professor at Yale University School of Nursing.
Features: The book begins with reviewing basic heart anatomy and then moves into interpreting rhythm strips as well as 12-lead ECGs. Dysrhythmias move from sinus, atrial, junctional, and ventricular to AV blocks. The book concludes with the basics of 12-lead interpretation. Additional content in the appendixes include the ACLS algorithms and multiple practice strips. The book is organized with recurring logos that key the readers into pertinent points. The book is exceptionally colorful and draws readers' interest to the multiple boxes and pictures. The only drawback is that the practice strips are a bit small, making it harder for interpretation.
Assessment: This is an overview of all current essential information one needs to read an ECG. It will be an excellent tool for those who need to know the basics but not complex content. The colorful and inviting design along with the easy read should give this book a spot at the top of a reading list.
