About the Author

Hieronymus had a rather idyllic childhood, growing up in the woods of West Virginia. He spent most of his time outside as a kid, playing sports usually, basketball, whiffle-ball, and a lot of two-hand touch football, among many other things. He loved to draw and read, science fiction mostly, when he wasn’t playing sports or board games.

He graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy with a degree in Economics, then went on to a thirty-year career as an Air Force pilot.

He was married for twenty-eight years before losing his wife to breast cancer, but he is the father of four grown children.

In June of 2015 he completed an MFA in Writing Popular Fiction from Seton Hill University. It took him a long time to figure out what he wanted to be when he grew up. Effacement is his debut novel.
When he’s not writing, he is probably listening to music, reading, or surfing the web. He also draws in pencil and pastel chalk and enjoys a good poker game.

The author brings us to a not-too-distant future that's very plausible, given the way technology is headed these days. The story was great, kept me turning the pages to find out what happened next. There were a few technical issues that didn't quite ring true, which is what prevented me from giving 5 stars, but overall a great read. I was rooting for the main character from beginning to end.

I enjoyed this book, though it isn't my normal genre. The reason I enjoyed it so much was that it wasn't over the top tech. It was a true natural progression from where we are now. Though Cole is a gifted man, he's not some super perfect hero. He has doubts and relationship problems. He needs help and he seeks it. That's realistic. What I really loved was the competent women in this book. There are five very competent women, who are friends or lovers.

There's a lot to like here. Hawkes used tension very well throughout, using the multiple layers of tension to power the narrative forward. The character development is solid as well. But the real power here is in the novel's theme—humanity's increasing hyperconnectivity, and the unforeseen consequences of that persistent connection. Readers who like cerebral thrillers like those by Michael Crichton should check out this impressive debut.
