Description: The chapters in this book have a common theme of the management of trigeminal neuralgia.
Purpose: Although intended for "advanced providers..., trainees, and motivated patients and family members" the book is probably too basic for neurosurgeons and too confusing for trainees and patients/families.
Audience: The authors include recognized authorities in the field of trigeminal neuralgia management, but one may get the impression that quite a lot of the book was written by neurosurgical trainees and medical students.
Features: This is an attempt to provide a comprehensive overview of trigeminal neuralgia, its clinical nuances, and different treatment modalities. There are several well-written chapters that are interesting to read and that provide useful information. However, there is a tremendous amount of repetition and an inexplicable focus on references rather than on original information.
Assessment: This book is part of a Research Essentials series, which is somewhat puzzling as it barely mentions research in the field of trigeminal neuralgia. Otherwise, however, it provides a balanced overview of most conventional approaches as well as the importance of interdisciplinary management of this disabling pain syndrome.
