CHAPTER 1

Knock Knock ... Your Body Needs You!

I have been sleep deprived for the past few days, and a friend who knows about it just sent me an online message:

"Notti (lingo-speak for naughty) ah ... still don't sleep."

My reply, "Bo bian (Singaporean-English term for no choice), I'm a workaholic ..."

My friend's reply, "Well, don't let your body teach you how to rest. You'll pay the price then!"

I had to laugh! I am teaching my workshop participants and clients about listening to their bodies, and here I am, not practising what I preach!

Actually, it has become a cliche to say things like "Listen to your body", "Follow your heart". How come we don't do it?

For me, it's a mixture of stubbornness and attachment. It's that familiar "I Want Something and I Want It Now!" So I'm not going to bed until I have done all that i wanted to do, even if it was to check email, chat with friends and other non-essential things like that.

What about you?

Why don't you listen to your body?

Whatever the answer is, take the chance now to tap on it.

Tapping on the Karate Chop, say "Even though I don't listen to my body because ________(insert your reason), I am willing to make a change, and give my body the love and attention it deserves."

Tap on the rest of the EFT points for 2-3 rounds, noticing your thoughts and emotions and finishing off with a couple of rounds while saying "I choose to listen to my body from now on."

Tap a little on this now or before you go to bed tonight.

Your body would appreciate you for this, and when it receives enough attention and love from you, it will also reciprocate by reducing the pains and discomforts in time to come, and reward you with wonderful health!

A regular participant of the Prosperity with EFT group sessions just shared with the group tonight, that he has been tapping regularly for about 2 months, and his back pain has been gradually reducing. The great thing about EFT is that it trains us to be mindful of our thoughts and feelings, and this means that we are also starting to listen to our body more and more. When that happens, our body no longer even need to communicate with us through pains and discomforts.

How about making a commitment to listen to your body more often from now on?

CHAPTER 2

The Meaning Of Procrastination

Dear One,

All of us, at one point or another, have a problem with procrastination. Of course, there are a million of reasons not to do something that we know we should do. But are those the real reasons?

I suggest that it's really not because you are lazy. It's also not because you don't know how to do the task. Neither is it because you have no time, or no energy, or anything else.

What's the real reason? Wanna guess?

.... F-E-A-R.

That's right! We put off doing something because we are afraid that doing it may lead to undesirable consequences. For example, we are afraid of not doing it well enough. For many of us, it is easier to find an excuse not do something than to do it and risk being judged for not doing it well enough. In fact, the fear of failure may be so great that you will even put up with the guilt and anxiety that comes with procrastination.

At "Prosperity with EFT" today, a participant shared that she is a perfectionist. She told us, "If I do something, it had better be done well, or else I won't do it at all. It's all or nothing!" I thank her for her honesty, because this gave us a chance to tap on this very common belief that many of us have that actually lead to procrastination.

Since young, many of us get scolded for not doing things "right". In our subconscious mind, we decide, "Hmm ... maybe it is better not to do things then ... at least I won't get scolded so much!" If you are currently procrastinating on a certain task, you might want to check with yourself, "If I don't do this the way it "should" be done, what undesirable things might happen?" Will you be judged by others? Or perhaps you may not meet certain standards and end up disappointing someone? Are you afraid that people would respond to you in a way that you feel uncomfortable with?

Take a few moments and reflect on these questions, "Why do I procrastinate on taking this action? What am I afraid of?" and tap on the answers. For example, "Even though I'm afraid that if I don't do it well enough, people will think i'm incompetent, I deeply and completely accept myself."

(Don't procrastinate on this one!)

By the way, the fear of being judged is one of the BIGGEST fears out there, and this fear exists because we judge ourselves. When we learn to accept ourselves, despite our imperfections and despite other people's judgments, we energize ourselves with enthusiasm and confidence to achieve all that is important to us, and every "failure" only becomes a stepping stone to our happiness and success!

Here is an EFT exercise for you:

Tapping on the Karate Chop point, say "Even though I have this procrastination issue, and maybe it is because there is something I fear, I choose to release all my resistance towards healing this issue and allow myself to be guided to move forward with more courage and joy."

Tap on the rest of the EFT points, noticing your thoughts and emotions and end with 2-3 rounds of tapping while you say "I choose to move forward and trust that all will be well."

Go for it!!! (and tap along the way....)

CHAPTER 3

"I Shouldn't Feel Negative!"(?)

Dear One,

I would like to share an excerpt from a blog entry that I wrote 3 days ago on a day when I was feeling melancholy:

* * *

Little boy was tearful when I told him to leave his big gun and super heavy library book in the car. He seldom cried with that much anguish, and I had to carry him all the way to the MRT. It wasn't a tantrum cry. There was something desolate about it, and so I didn't get angry. Instead I tapped on him with some affirmations of loving him even if his book and gun is not with him and he is crying. It doesn't make a lot of sense, but I still feel that it helps to know that you are being affirmed for your goodness and worth even when things are not going the way you want and you are heartbroken about it.

I'm not sure if my current mood has got anything to do with little boy. But my treatment of him this morning reminded me that this is how I need to treat myself too. Not feel upset that I'm feeling down (that "oh you should be more enlightened than this" voice is thankfully not around today). Or urgently want to tap it away (nothing against tapping of course, but it's the intention behind it). Or distract myself by thinking of happy stuff or using affirmations.

In fact I was half-wondering if I should indeed try to focus on more positive things, as according to the teachings of Law of Attraction. I experimented with doing the opposite. Instead of resisting that voice within me that sounded like "I'm so lousy", I paid closer attention to it, almost embracing it with patience and understanding.

Within half a second, that voice melted away, and I then heard another statement "Oh I'm not that bad." Ok.

I had a little epiphany where I saw clearly how forcing myself to replace that negative thought in my mind with a positive thought such as "I'm wonderful" would just create an internal war.

"I'm lousy!"

"I'm wonderful!"

"No I'M LOUSY!"

"NO ... I'M WONDERFUL!!!"

Of course, the louder and more persistent one would win in the end, but perhaps, there wasn't a need for the war in the first place.

How about just accepting the negative voice, albeit its nature of being negative?

"I'm lousy"

<ok.... i'm here to listen to you>

*pause....*

"Actually i'm not so bad."

This is one reason why EFT works so well. Instead of trying to replace the negative emotion through correction, it simply acknowledges and accepts it as part of the person's wholeness. I think it's also a big lesson for me to keep listening and accepting my emotions. I teach that in my workshops ... but it's also something I'm striving to practice day by day. Like my little boy's tears, this melancholy comes from somewhere and ignoring it, or worse, judging it, would not make it go away. So don't ask me to cheer up ... I'll learn to befriend the melancholy for a while, and perhaps when it feels safe enough, it would tell me about its background and purpose for being here.

* * *

All too often, we judge ourselves for being angry, sad, worried, etc. Those of you, after learning about the power of positive thinking and the Law of Attraction, start feeling anxious or guilty when you find yourself experiencing a negative emotion, HANDS UP!

(Don't worry ... I'm raising up my hand too!)

While negative emotions are not to be dwelled upon, they are not to be pushed away either. Yes, it is a fine line between acknowledging and honouring our emotions and indulging in them ... and that's why I love EFT, because it allows one to acknowledge and honour the emotion, and at the same time, let the emotion flow through and out of the body, so there is no danger of over-indulging.

I end off with this enlightening poem from Rumi, "The Guest House":

The Guest House

This being human is a guest house. Every morning a new arrival. A joy, a depression, a meanness, some momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor. Welcome and entertain them all! Even if they're a crowd of sorrows, who violently sweep your house empty of its furniture, still, treat each guest honorably. He may be clearing you out for some new delight. The dark thought, the shame, the malice, meet them at the door laughing, and invite them in. Be grateful for whoever comes, because each has been sent as a guide from beyond.

Here's a tapping exercise for you to try out. Choose your least favourite emotion and tap on it.

Tapping on the Karate Chop point , say, "Even though I really hate feeling ______(your least favourite emotion), I choose to honour this emotion and allow it to be my teacher and healer."

And tap on the rest of the points, allowing yourself to experience that emotion and just be mindful of the thoughts that arise. Finishing off by tapping 2 - 3 rounds while you say "I allow this emotion to be my teacher and healer."

Love yourself ... negativity and all!

CHAPTER 4

The Greatest Teacher Of All Time

Dear One,

Hint ... the answer to the question in the subject is not a who, it's a what....

The greatest teacher in all time is none other than your BODY! Have you taken the time to listen to your body recently?

What I often teach in my EFT workshops is to pay attention to your body before your body MAKES you pay attention. Getting headaches, body tensions, back pains, etc are nothing more than a sign that there are areas in your life that is out of balance.

Not only is our body our greatest healer, it is also our greatest teacher. Whenever you feel anything less than energised and light, your body is teaching you to reflect on your thoughts and your life.

It's interesting that our body often teaches us by creating discomfort in ways that parallels our life.

Vision always feeling blurry? What are the problems in your life that you are trying not to see?

Throat feeling sore? When are the times do you find yourself suppressing your voice instead of expressing your truths honestly and clearly?

Having knee problems? What areas in your life do you find yourself being inflexible and rigid? What keeps you from moving forward in your life?

(To know more, check out Louise Hays' book You Can Heal Your Life.)

It is well accepted in the holistic health field that all physical problems start off as an energetic imbalance in the body, which is created by unresolved emotions and self-sabotaging behaviour. If you don't change the way you live your life, your physical problems would continue to recur, or worsen.

Medical bills aren't cheap! So take some time now to check in with your body. Pay attention to the areas which are not completely at ease, and do some tapping on them. "Even though I am feeling this ____ (tension/ pain/ tightness/ etc), I am willing to pay attention to the messages my body is giving me, and be guided towards healing now."

A little tapping each day goes a long way. A participant at Prosperity with EFT commented a couple weeks back that his chronic back pain has improved greatly over the past few months and he attributed much of it to EFT.

Another participant noticed her headaches reducing ever since she started doing EFT.

So here's an EFT exercise for you if you are experiencing some physical discomfort right now.

Tapping on the Karate Chop point, say "Even though I have this physical discomfort, and I wonder what is my body trying to tell me, I choose to acknowledge this issue and thank my body for telling me that there is something I need to heal, and I am willing to receive all the information I need from my body in order to heal all emotional aspects of this issue."

Tap on the remaining points as you notice your thoughts and emotions, and finish off by tapping 2 - 3 rounds while saying "I thank my body for these messages and healing."

Remember, the best way to care for others is to care for yourself first. When you are healthy in body, mind and spirit, you become a greater blessing to others in your life!

CHAPTER 5

Vibrational Whiplash From EFT ("Tapping Makes It Worse!")

Dear One,

I received an email from Alicia (name changed for confidentiality reasons) which I got permission to share here:

Hi Lena

Trust you are well.

I have been tapping on 2 issues related to abundance recently, and was shocked and upset by the completely negative results. One of which was re: price negotiation of an apartment, but strangely the seller suddenly refused to sell after I tapped on the pricing. I related this to you before.

The other more critical issue is this, which I need your advice on: I tapped on receiving recognition (NOT job promotion or pay raise, just plain awareness or gratitude from the boss!) for my general work effort. However, immediately after 2 nights of tapping, one big project which I just started on was very badly received - my boss literally flung the documents and completely rejected every proposal put forth, humiliating me in front of my team. She has asked me to resubmit the proposal by tuesday, and if I fail this time, she has plans to fire me. This is bad beyond my wildest expectations.

I read from the EFT forum a similar experience related by user: http://eftcommunity.emofree.com/forums/t/5721. aspx

Do you have advice for me? Any further explanation on this? Perhaps on a deeper level, I am simply not ready to receive abundance? I am scared to tap on anything now, for fear of receiving such a massive whiplash. I daren't even tap for inspiration/ideas for the revised proposal which I am suppose to crank up during this long weekend.

Hope to hear from you, thanks very much for your time, help and kindness.

Regards,

Alicia

My email reply to her was as follows:

Thanks for your email.

When we are starting on our healing journey, it can be initially quite unpleasant, cos now we are peeling away the layers of the onion and letting all those yucky stuff rise to the surface.

Think about a pot of decomposed food that has been covered for years. Now you finally decided to take a look at it, and you open the lid. But opening the lid is only the first step. You're kinda at this stage now. You have just opened up the lid and the stench of all those decomposed food is attracting flies like crazy. That's why you are experiencing all these negative experiences, which are actually a reflection of those hidden fears within you.

I welcome you to see me for private consultations so that I can support you in your healing journey and clear away those issues more cleanly. Everyone needs support on their healing journey ... and it doesn't have to be THAT painful.

Take your time to decide, and when you are ready, just let me know. In the meantime, keep tapping, and you will ultimately see spring blossoms one day.

It was not only her who has been experiencing unpleasant situations with EFT. Few days ago, I also received an email from a lady who attended the last "Prosperity with EFT" session where the topic was "Facing Our Greatest Fear". She shared with me that it was a very uncomfortable session for her, which was unusual as she usually felt energised by these sessions, and she did not understand why this session was so different.

I was not surprised by her response as the topic for the session was indeed heavier than usual. I explained to her that fear is an energy that attracts negativity which usually manifests as physical discomfort, bad feelings and negative experiences. Hence, what she experienced was perfectly normal. And I congratulated her for what she wrote at the end of the email.

"After much pondering, I remembered that you mentioned that we should accept whatever feelings we have and "it's ok". So, I told myself, "it's ok to have this feeling, I don't need an explanation or justification, just be with the feeling and I don't need to fear it". Pow! It was gone. Now, I am feeling calm and peaceful, even thinking of tonight's strange event did not affect me."
