About the Author

GROWING UP ON A FAMILY FARM, Ellen and her siblings explored the natural world and thrived on the freedom it afforded them. It stimulated their imaginations for inventive play. Ellen and her brothers, using an old farm pulley, cleverly engineered an early zip line.

Experiences as a mother of two and a long-time physical education/history teacher provided Ellen a myriad of opportunities to cultivate community and family celebrations such as neighborhood circuses. Her festive events and activities have been featured in a number of newspapers and on an international television program.

For a Core Knowledge curriculum project, Ellen developed a number of hands-on integrated events for elementary age students, including "American Indian," "Westward Expansion," "Fairy Tale," The Harvest Feast of 1621" and "Riverboat Days." The "Medieval Feast" remains a favorite. Presented by fourth graders, it features fanfares, students in costume as jesters, minstrel singers, tumblers and more. The event enhances and culminates the student's studies of medieval history.

Ellen published Create a Celebration in 1991. Over forty thematic party themes and holiday activities fill its pages. In addition, she has created and written several lovely bridal and baby shower activities along with holiday toast and sentiment collections. Ellen believes that people, more than ever, should come together in celebration, reveling with joy and laughter.
