About the Author

Annie Nielsen lives with her family in Moose River, Maine, where she enjoys the simpler things in life, such as fishing, hiking, photography, and exploring the countryside. Her favorite pastime is writing, however, which can be done anywhere at any time as long as there is a pencil and a piece of paper handy!

Growing up in a rural area offered opportunities for outdoor adventures that ignited the imagination. As a young girl, she would explore the old cellar hole just up the road from her home in Plymouth, Maine, pausing long enough to fill an old cottage cheese container with fresh, ripe blackberries. Occasionally, she would explore the woods out back beyond the field, looking for bones, feathers, and animals, or just listening to birds and chipmunks.

Exploration usually ended with plucked wildflowers made into a bouquet for her mother. Lilac trees grew near the cellar hole foundation, so the bouquets often had aromatic purple and white flowers.

At night in the summer, she would sleep in her "cabin" tent that leaked a little on one side during rain storms. The pooled water never bothered her, though, since the divider curtain in the center blocked the view. In fact, tenting was the favorite part of summer vacations from school.
