About the Author

Mohammadreza Hojat, Ph.D. is Research Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, and Director of the Jefferson Longitudinal Study of Medical Education at Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was born in Mashhad, Iran, received his bachelor’s degree from Pahlavi University (currently University of Shiraz), his master’s degree from the University of Tehran in Iran, and his doctoral degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Hojat is a licensed psychologist in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and has published more than 200 articles in peer-reviewed journals on educational, psychological, and social issues.

Description: This is an expanded version of a 2007 book, Empathy in Patient Care: Antecedents, Development, Measurement, and Outcomes by the same author.
Purpose: The two books explore the author's concept of empathy in the health professions, starting with empathy as a human being and then focusing on the human being in the health professions from a multidisciplinary perspective and particularly the research from the Jefferson Scale of Empathy developed at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University.
Audience: The audience includes all engaged in the health professions, from students to practitioners of all health disciplines as well as all who teach in the health professions.
Features: The book is divided into two parts, one on empathy in human relationships and one on empathy in health professions education and patient care. The chapters in each part are standalone monographs on various aspects of the concept of empathy, such as human connection in health and illness, psychodynamics and development, the Jefferson Scale of Empathy, empathy as related to personal qualities, career choice, acquisition of knowledge, and clinical competency, and erosion and enhancement of empathy. Each chapter starts with an abstract, defines terms, and develops the concepts with very detailed, referenced conclusions. The chapter on the Jefferson Scale of Empathy is an extensive description of the evaluation tool, the criteria used in the tool, and an outline of the validation of the tool.
