Encounters with the Archdruid by John McPhee

The narratives in this book are of journeys made in three wildernesses - on a coastal island, in a Western mountain range, and on the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. The four men portrayed here have different relationships to their environment, and they encounter each other on mountain trails, in forests and rapids, sometimes with reserve, sometimes with friendliness, sometimes fighting hard across a philosophical divide.

This book gave me mixed feelings. At first glance, it is poorly written. The vocabulary of the author is limited, and the constant flashbacks often leave the reader confused as to what it going on. Having said that, the details about each scene are very vivid and are easily imagined. It is likely that I would not recommend this book to a friend.
