The articles are of three kinds: accessible, survey-type articles that deal with the various main directions in mathematics; more expert-oriented, medium-length articles that contain more detailed, concrete problems, results, and techniques; and short (reference) definitions. Most articles were specially written for the Soviet encyclopedia, and practically all contain a list of references.
