Description: This is the sixth edition of this wonderful primer on neonatal medicine (first edition in 1987, fifth edition in 2012). Written by internationally known experts in the U.K. and Australia, it has a concise style and wonderful pictures, drawings, and charts. This edition has updated references, an easily accessed website with questions to test understanding, and new chapters on transport and palliative care, and an additional emphasis on developmental and family care.
Purpose: The purpose, according to the authors, is to provide "a comprehensive introduction to modern neonatology for trainee doctors, neonatal nurses, nurse practitioners and allied health professionals." This worthy objective is certainly met by this well-done book.
Audience: The audience includes physician trainees and other bedside caretakers, such as nurses, in the NICU. While the book may be somewhat basic for attending neonatologists, the graphs, tables, figures, and clinical tips will certainly help me in my teaching duties. The authors are internationally known authorities in the field who have extensive publications to their credit.
Features: This is a basic primer that covers most topics in neonatology in 30 chapters. Each chapter starts with "Key Topics" that will be covered and emphasized. The fonts are easy to read and there are superb pictures, figures, and charts throughout. There are also strategically placed "clinical tips" in each chapter that provide critical insights from an experienced care provider. The book also has an easily accessed website with an updated reading list, downloadable figures, and a self-assessment quiz after each chapter.
Assessment: This is a wonderful resource for physician trainees and bedside caretakers in the NICU. It is comparable to Klaus and Fanaroff's Care of the High-Risk Neonate, 6th edition, Fanaroff and Fanaroff (Elsevier, 2013), but it has more color and illustrations for novices. For attending neonatologists, this book will be helpful in teaching. It is a wonderful contribution to this fast-growing field.
