It blends historical roots, implicit bias, racial, ethical, immigration status, gender, sexual orientation, social status, disabilities, and rural populations' perspectives to understand health disparities. Beyond social determinants of health, the book strives for health justice through programs that support population health.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a primer or a book that presents concrete strategies for combating health disparities and promoting health justice. These worthy objectives are met.
Audience: The primary audience is students in health policy, health professions, public health, health administration, or health law. The book also is appropriate for social justice students and social workers.
Features: The book's format supports student learning, as each chapter starts with learning objectives and key areas are bolded and used as section titles. The book starts with historical actions/laws that have contributed to discrimination and bias in healthcare. The next group of chapters addresses the social factors that contribute to health disparities, including being part of a vulnerable population such as those incarcerated. Social barriers and the factors that contribute to poverty are discussed in detail. One unique section covers housing issues related to health and another topic, toxic stress.
