Chapter One

"It's time to rise and shine, my little hero! We have a busy day ahead," said Mommy. "What does my little hero want to wear today?"

"That depends," said Tommy. "What are we doing today?"

"Well, we need to drop off some donations for the children and the soldiers that are in the hospital. We have some books and cards for the soldiers, and we have some coloring books, crayons, and toys for the children."

"We also need to stop by the post office to mail the cookies we made for the soldiers that are serving their country away from home. The last place we need to go to is the grocery store. I could really use the help of my little hero to carry some of the bags and boxes," said Mommy.

"Okay, I can do that! I really like it when we get to help people," said Tommy.

"You know, every hero needs to start their day with a good breakfast—or they wont have the energy and strength they need. Are you ready to eat now? I made your favorite, blueberry pancakes," said Mommy.

"You bet!" said Tommy.

"Okay, Mom, I'm ready! I've brushed my teeth, washed my face, combed my hair, and I even picked up my clothes!" Tommy said.

"Oh, my! I didn't even have to remind you," Mommy replied. "What a big boy you are. Thank you for doing a good job. You're my little hero! Looks like its time to go now."

On the way to the hospital, Tommy sees a fire truck leaving a fire station. "Mommy, are firefighters heroes?" Tommy asked.

"Yes, firefighters are heroes. The firefighters rescue people from burning buildings and put out fires. They help keep our homes and forests safe. They also rescue people from car accidents and other dangerous situations," said Mommy.

Tommy sees a police officer assisting a man who is having a problem with his car. "Are police officers heroes?" Tommy asked.

"Yes, police officers are heroes too. They help us when we have an emergency and help enforce our laws by making sure everyone obeys the rules. They also protect us from bad people who might try to hurt us," said Mommy.

As they arrive at the hospital, Tommy sees an ambulance. "Are the people who work at the hospital heroes?" asked Tommy.

"Yes. The doctors, nurses, and other people who work at the hospital are heroes too. They each have special jobs, and they help us get better when were sick or hurt," said Mommy.
