About the Author

Dr. Robert C. Hyzy is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Dr. Hyzy is a graduate of Kenyon College and received his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine in New York City. Dr. Hyzy completed his residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Michigan. He is Director of the Critical Care Medicine Unit at the University of Michigan Hospital and Co-Chair of the University of Michigan Hospital Critical Care Committee. Dr. Hyzy’s research interests are in the area of critical care medicine, including ARDS, ventilator associated pneumonia, and quality improvement. He was the principal investigator of an NIH funded trial examining the efficacy of GM-CSF in patients with Acute Lung Injury. He is currently the site Principal Investigator of NIH sponsored trials in the treatment of ARDS and in the treatment of delirium in the intensive care unit. He is a member of the American College of Chest Physicians Guidelines Oversight Committee and Chairs the American Thoracic Society Quality Improvement Committee. Dr. Hyzy has spoken nationally and internationally on several topics related to Critical Care Medicine. He has published multiple articles and chapters in medical journals and textbooks and has served as a reviewer for several major medical journals including Critical Care Medicine, Chest, Annals of Internal Medicine and the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. His editorial work includes a volume of the Clinics in Critical Care Medicine, entitled, “Enhancing the Quality of Care in the ICU, ” published in 2013. In addition, Dr. Hyzy contributes thirteen topics on mechanical ventilation to the web based medical resource UpToDate.

Description: This is the second edition of a case-based critical care textbook. The original edition was published in 2017.
Purpose: The purpose is to present a survey of cases selected by the contributing authors of each chapter. Chapters review treatment strategies for the clinical problem and present standard as well as more controversial management options.
Audience: This book, written by a multidisciplinary group of contributors, will benefit senior trainees in critical care medicine coming from the core disciplines of internal medicine, anesthesiology, and surgery. The authors and contributors are affiliated with the medical school at the University of Michigan.
Features: The book contains groups of chapters divided by organ system and the clinical service providing care to patients with specific problems. The initial chapters discuss critical care in the emergency room with topics including cardiac arrest, shock, respiratory failure, toxicology, and hypothermia. Subsequent chapter groups include topics consistent with traditional cardiopulmonary disease, neurologic disorders, renal and metabolic disease, endocrinopathies, infectious disease, gastrointestinal crises, and hematologic problems. The cardiac chapters emphasize rhythm problems and coronary artery disease. Respiratory topics emphasize mechanical ventilation and its complications. Neurologic disorders include status epilepticus, meningitis and neuromuscular disease. The renal presentations include electrolyte disorders and management of acute kidney injury. The endocrine chapters discuss endocrine organs individually. Infectious disease presentations include sepsis but emphasize atypical pathogens such as malaria, leptospirosis, and dengue. Gastrointestinal disorders include peritonitis, bleeding, and pancreatitis. Hematologic topics emphasize coagulopathy and complications of hematopoietic cell line disorders. Two brief sets of chapters describe surgical problems and critical care in obstetrics. A small number of topics related to trauma and surgical infections are included as well as one presentation on ECMO. Concluding presentations describe administration and ethical concerns. The chapters are clearly written and contain three parts. First is a brief case presentation in one or two paragraphs followed by a literature-based discussion of standard management. The third portion of the chapter includes controversial aspects of management for the clinical issue listed. Illustrations are frequently used and effectively presented. Some are clinical photographs. Line drawings describe treatment strategies. Each chapter contains an ample reference list. While some topics have references dating to within one year of publication of this volume, other chapters have few references more recent than 10 years prior to release of this book. The table of contents groups chapters according to organ system while a brief subject index offers adequate access to content.
Assessment: This edition is a clear update to the original version of the book. The number and quality of illustrations is improved. Overall presentation of this hardbound volume is impressive. At times, however, discussion of topics is limited by the bounds of the presented cases. In addition, some of the management strategies described for individual problems may be viewed as controversial. While the range of included topics is impressive, it is likely to be perceived as a board review book rather than a comprehensive survey volume.
