Sets forth the instance view of explanation, a type of ontic conception of explanation. Examines the much-discussed problem for the received view known as the asymmetries of explanation as a starting point, then focuses directly on the shortcomings of Carl Hempel's account of scientific explanation. Works out solutions to this problem on the basis of two alternatives, and suggests a project for the theory of explanation that involves a multidisciplinary approach. Final chapters on quantity and explanation in quantum mechanics attempt to apply the theory developed earlier.
