Feel the Burn by G. A. Aiken

War makes strange bedfellows.

I, Gaius Domitus, one-eyed rebel dragon king of the Provinces, know that better than most, since I have to fight off half my ungrateful family on a regular basis to keep law and order here in my lands. But I never expected to have to consort with a barbarian human woman.

Kachka is beautiful, if you like them fierce—and of course I do. But she keeps complaining about how spoiled and decadent I am, and how a feared Daughter of the Steppes has no time for foolish dragons. I think she likes my eye patch, though. It is quite dashing. With death always at our tails, we take our passion like we take our allies. As they say, love the barbarian you’re with…

Love this series. Each book has its own story with a great character on a different Adventure. They always tie-in people from the past books. There was a lot more depth to the rebel King then I was expecting.

Kachka had been of the Black Bear Riders but had given up that harsh life to save her sister Elena from their mother. Now Kachka was living in hell as far as she is concerned. Kachka thought their mother would kill her and Elena. But their mother had been killed by Anneyl the Bloody, Queen of the Southlands. Garbhan had alot of dragons in human form. Kachka did not understand why humans would mate with dragons. If Kachka had stayed with the Riders she would have had a purpose. Kachka needed apurpose and to m ake a name for herself.Kachka was a Daughter Of The Steppes. Gaius the Iron Dragon and the Rebel King. Letitu was his aunt and asking Gaius why he himself must fight instead of sending his men and dragons and leaving his twin to rule. Aggie had been caught and held by her cousin Vateria for five long years. Noone knew what Aggie went through but there were nights she did not sleep or she woke up screaming. Aggie grabbed her brother and asked what he ahd done as Mi-runach which were warriors who only answered to the Dragon Queen. This story was just to busy for me. All these characters are brought in and just got me confused. I got some parts of the story but I just got bored tying- or trying to- everything together. I usually love dragon stories but this one not so much. I had not read the other stories in this series or I might not have been so confused.but also this didn’t have the WOW factor for me that kept me reading or wanting to read.

Very funny, and great story. This author has an amazing imagination. However there are a lot of characters and it skips to different people throughout the book making it harder to follow. Still a good read.

This is a book that seems to be written as a series of meshed novellas, rather than the single novel it is supposed to be. I had been loosing interest in this series a couple of books back and decided to give this author another shot since the beginning of the series was so much fun. However, nothing seems to have changed and I find that it just isn't fun anymore. The interaction between the main lovers doesn't even start until you are approximately 43% through with the book. There are so many sub-plots by this point in the book, that I can't keep them all straight. I am sure that they are all straightened out by the end, but I have simply lost interest in what might happen in the future. It is too bad too since the main plot of the desecration of the Temples, was an interesting one. However, Gaius and Kachka just got on my nerves after a while...especially Kachka. Trying to see them in a romance no matter how it was going to be portrayed - was typical of this author. Take two highly unlikely, poles apart people (dragon King/female warrior and shove them into bed together and voilà insta-love! This trope is getting old.The editing/formatting issues had supposedly been fixed, but you can't prove it by me!

Fantasy world described in clear dramatic detail Wow just wow. I have never read anything by G.A. Aiken but I have read reviews, watched the book award polls and talked with other bloggers about her books. I knew I just had to read something by this author and I am glad to finally get my hands on one of her books.
The fantasy world that this series evolves around is described in clear dramatic detail. It creates a world where women rule and though some men may rule they defer to their strong women in a manner that amused me. I love the balance the author has in her writing where the women are strong, abrupt, decisive and yet they are able to love their man who is also strong, loving and actually quite funny in some of the scenes as they appear to be deferring to the women.
Kachka is great. She has no respect for man she just wants to fight and hunt. Her character was so abrupt at times that I was thinking whoo! Further in the story I got why she acted this way and I understood the dynamics of the various people, their areas they lived and how they acted.
Gaius is a mighty warrior but it was refreshing to see how much he loved his sister and later Kachka. The best part of his character was that he didn't try to change his women. He sat back and protected and even laughed at them. I got a kick out of how he looked at what was going on around him and got great humor from it. Even when it got him in hot water with Kachka.
I will read more of this author. I want to know what is happening and where they came from so it looks like I have some books I will need to get that lead up to this story.
