I was looking forward to this third book of the Njoro Series, and enjoyed this exciting novel very much. It is very much a prequel to the first of the Njoro Series, covering the twenty years previous to book one that covers mostly Wanjiru's English father Thomas Tatton and his marriages and tragic death. The story is woven around an ambitious young man Odhuno who was Tatton's former student and husband to Eve. Odhuno divorces Eve, who quickly sees Tatton as husband material. Tatton's previous intimate relations with his housekeeper Esther leads later to the birth of Wanjiru, the main character of book three, and minor character in book one. Odhuno's ambitious climb up the ladder of the new Kenyan government is not enough for him in terms of wealth and power, leading to his poaching schemes and government corruptions. This is an exciting, sensual yet violent story about love, betrayal and loss.
