About the Author

Fred Ferri is a Clinical Professor of Community Health at the Alpert Medical School, Brown University and author of over 30 medical books. He has been the best-selling medical author in the United States over the past 25 years and is also well known and respected internationally. He has been a visiting Professor at other medical schools and many of his books have been translated in several languages. In addition to his numerous publications, he has had a distinguished academic career at Brown University where he has received several awards for his dedication to teaching including the Brown University Excellence in Teaching award and Dean’s teaching Award, and with the American College of Physicians where he was inducted as a Fellow in the ACP and has been a recipient of the Irving Addison Beck Award from the Rhode Island Chapter of the American College of Physicians. Dr. Ferri is a practicing physician at Ocean State Medical, a group primary care practice that he established in 1984 and still runs along with two other partners and his two sons.

The book is accompanied by access to a website with a downloadable version.
Purpose: This version continues to be an extraordinarily comprehensive and well-organized book with the clinical material, differential diagnosis possibilities, algorithms, laboratory testing, and latest clinical guidelines. The concept is that everything a clinician may need answers to will be in this one book.
Audience: The audience is all clinicians, whether primary care providers or specialty consultants, who want a fast memory aid for diagnoses they see infrequently. Of note, there are many patient information pages in English and Spanish available from the online version that may be downloaded and printed out.
Features: As the title indicates, this is essentially five books in one, but there is much more that has been the foundation of this book. The first section is a concise yet comprehensive listing of diagnoses in alphabetical order with basic information about the diagnosis, common synonyms, a very worthwhile listing of ICD-10 codes (ICD-9 codes have been dropped), pertinent physical findings and clinical presentations (symptoms), the workup and differential diagnoses, current treatments, clinical pearls about the diagnosis, any evidence-based practices, and suggested readings. The book moves on through common and current algorithms to guide treatment, listings of normal laboratory interpretations, and preventive medicine recommendations. Of tremendous value are the extensive appendixes on complementary and alternative treatments, relaxation techniques, an overview of natural products including supplements and vitamins, the diagnosis and treatment of acute poisonings, impairment and disability guidelines, primary care procedures, and patient teaching guides.
Assessment: This is an incredibly useful addition to a busy clinician's smartphone or digital device.
