Purpose: It aims to prepare students for the USMLE Step 1 by providing high-yield information. There is a great need for reviews like this because of the growing amount of information that medical students must master.
Audience: The intended audience is medical students reviewing material for Step 1.
Features: The book is broadly divided into four sections, each with numerous chapters. Section one discusses general information about the test, such as test-taking strategies. Section two has high-yield facts from basic sciences like pathology and microbiology. Section three has high-yield facts organized into organ systems, such as neurology and endocrinology. Section four has reviews of study resources. The book is well organized and limited to must-know information, which are its greatest strengths. There are numerous mnemonics and memory aids to help students retain information. A significant number of photographs and figures are used to expand upon or summarize associated topics. The pages are somewhat thin, so that notes will be visible on the other side. The book's biggest strength (only high-yield facts) may also represent a downside for some students, who might need more detailed discussions.
Assessment: This has long been a must-have component of every medical student's toolkit for Step 1 preparation. This updated edition further builds on this foundation by adding over 250 new images and revisions. While the additions are not game-changing, it is still worth it to get the newest version. No other book comes close to what this one does best - concentrate on high-yield facts. However, some students may benefit from more in-depth review books, such as Rapid Review Pathology, 4th edition, Goljan (Elsevier, 2014).
