First Time Away From the Web
When my kids were little, we would lay on the trampoline in our backyard in the evening and I would make up stories about a little spider. The idea was the spider would watch the children play and wonder with curiosity what was happening. From there, The Googly Eyed Spider was created. In this story, The Googly Eyed Spider leaves the web for the first time, but is not excited about it. Mother gives encouragement, direction, and models how to leave the web and leads The Googly Eyed Spider to a different tree. The walk took a very long time and was filled with danger, but Mother teaches The Googly Eyed Spider how to be safe and have fun. As they reach the new tree, The Googly Eyed Spider instantly notices the tree looks and feels different from their own. I am excited about sharing this adventure with other readers.

About the Author

I have always been a story teller. Whether around the campfire with teenagers and friends or snuggled up on the couch with my own children, I love to tell stories. Once my children became adults, they encouraged me to write some of the stories down. A friend of mine moved to Orcutt when I was in 8th grade and they quickly embraced me into their family. His mother, Minnie, illustrated my first Googly Eyed Spider book which was very special to me. Minnie is an award winning artist with art work around the world. She is best known for her graphite portraits. When I asked my children what they thought The Googly Eyed looked like they each said, “I never thought about it, I was the spider.” It was through Minnie’s imagination that the image of The Googly Eyed Spider was created, and for that I will always be grateful. As I look forward to grandchildren, I wanted them to experience some of the same stories my children did, and now they can.
