Arturo P. Saavedra, MD, PhD, MBA, is assistant professor of Dermatology, Dermatopathology, and Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA.

Ellen K. Roh, MD, is affiliated with Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA.

Anar Mikailov, MD, is a dermatologist in Burlington, MA, and the co-founder of Boston Skin Science and Skintensive.

Description: Since the first edition of this atlas was published in 1983, students and clinicians have been blessed with Dr. Fitzpatrick's genius. He has shared his clinical expertise in diagnosing skin disorders and provided outstanding color photographs illustrating the characteristic findings. This ninth edition is an update to the previous version, which was published in 2017.
Purpose: The purpose of the book is to teach readers how to become great dermatologists. The book begins with basic learning principles of observations and how to synthesize these into generating an appropriate differential diagnosis.
Audience: The audience includes dermatology residents and anyone in the medical field who has an interest in learning about dermatology.
Features: The book discusses the entities succinctly, covering the presentation, clinical course, prognosis, and treatment. Excellent photographs of all the diseases discussed accompany the text. The book also includes international disease classification codes for diseases. The shaded boxes highlight important points. Some omissions include monkeypox and COVID-19 cutaneous manifestations, but I suspect this is because the book was written after these developments occurred.
Assessment: This book is an excellent reference, and even well-versed readers should own it. It was one of my first purchases as a dermatology resident and has remained a perennial favorite. The book includes gorgeous photography and is handy as a quick look-up reference/refresher. This updated edition is definitely needed, given the new treatments (biologics, JAK inhibitors) for old diseases, and new diseases that have a unique presentation or can mimic common diseases.
