Overview

Southern California hillsides are burning. Not too unusual until these seemingly random acts quickly take a savage turn. Friends and partners, Fire Investigator Captain Phillip Scott, a twenty-year veteran of the Fire Department and Police Detective Sergeant David Thomas trail an arsonist.

Or so they think.

Over forty combined years of training and knowledge would be tested to limits beyond their friendship and, if they survive, will they still be friends? What is the true target? Why have they been involved so deeply? And why is the arsonist taking their investigation so personal?

Along the way, Battalion Chief William Martinez leads the daily battles, and the courage of an everyday hero is displayed as Fire Captain Douglas Fitzgerald leads his Engine Company through the flames and destruction leading somewhere they too could never suspect.

About the Author

Twenty years of experience on a small municipal volunteer Fire Department in Southern California provided for a wide variety of experiences. A Fire Captain II, EMT-AA-D, and Fire Investigator on a Department surrounded by career Departments ranging in size from small to as large as the County of Los Angeles Fire Department, Steve Bickel followed the State of California’s “career” firefighter training path.

Fire Academy through State certifications as Fire Officer, Fire Prevention Officer, Fire Investigator, Fire Service Instructor, Trench Rescue Instructor, and Rescue Systems 1 and 2. Steve trained with career firefighters and fire officers to further his knowledge and skills.

Experience through service to his community range from responding to routine fires and medical emergencies to mutual aid responses to adjacent cities. From single engine grass fire responses to large campaign fires such as those that occur in Yosemite. From staging officer on a multi-day brush fire in the hills above his town to assistant strike team leader in the middle of the 1992 civil disturbance in the City of Los Angeles.

The idea for this suspense novel grew from over fifteen years of experience and hundreds of training hours in fire cause and origin investigation. Steve worked with some of the finest fire and law enforcement fire origin and cause investigators in the Los Angeles area as part of a fire investigation regional strike team where he also served in a leadership role. Memberships in the California Conference of Arson Investigators and the International Association of Arson Investigators until retirement from active duty provided a rich background from which this fictitious story could be drawn.

In professional life, Steve was an Area Manager for a major communications corporation in the greater Los Angeles area with responsibilities for mobile emergency cellular equipment supporting major entertainment events and emergency operations in multiple states.

An American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) Coach, Referee, Referee Instructor. Held several Board positions for AYSO Region 13 including Regional Commissioner.
