Left with no other options, Evangeline is enrolled in a program for troubled teens at Kindred Hides Wildlife Preserve. There she meets Caster, a keeper as annoying as he is caring; Jett and Lettie, who treat her more like a daughter than troubled teen; and Ruke, a prized giraffe in mourning for his lost mate.
Immersed in the preserve with her new friends, Evangeline finally begins to heal. But the haunting memories of the accident and her mother's unforgiving words threaten to destroy her progress. Only her new friends and their unconditional support, along with her own special connection with Ruke, can save her.
Evangeline must learn that there is redemption for her father's death, and that the bonds between human, animal, and life are not as fragile as she once thought.

I was completely mesmerized by the affection that was so apparent between Evangeline and Ruke. Thankfully I was not disappointed one bit when I read the book. Later in the story, I loved that the author created Evangeline to be an artist, reminiscent of the beautiful artwork on the cover. The grief and pain that Evangeline experienced was gut-wrenching. When she meets and begins to work with Ruke, the giraffe who is as heart-broken as she is herself. In working to help mend the giraffe’s broken heart, she finds the redemption she herself so desperately needs. There are moments in the story with great amounts of giggles and grins as well as frustrated one minuted and sobbing the next. Kristina had her finger on the pulse of the entire story and kept me turning pages beginning to end. This story ended up being absolutely amazing. From the moment I first saw the cover and all the way through the story, my heart was totally involved. I would certainly recommend this book to both young and older adults alike and if you are an animal lover, you won’t want to miss this story for sure. Rating: 5 Stars***** *Disclosure: I received this book in exchange for my honest and unbiased review. All opinions are my own and no further compensation was received.
This is the 3rd book I've read by this author. I love the way she sucks you into the story that you want the world to stop so you can just read. I read this book slowly because I didn't want it to end, but at the same time I was eager to see how it ended. Evangeline has survived a horrible car accident. Unfortunately, her father also died in that accident. Her mother is not an alcoholic and not what her daughter needs. Evangeline ends up in a program for troubled teens. It's not your normal program though. She gets to work with animals. She is able to help them as much as they help her. There are so many emotions that take place in this book. You really feel for Evangeline and want to just take her in your arms and mother her in the way she needs. She is forced to grow up way too fast. I totally fell in love with the characters. I would actually love to see a follow up book to see how Evangeline is doing now. She is one of those characters that just stays with you.
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!!! VERY VERY EMOTIONAL!!! DESERVES MORE THAN JUST 5 STARS!!! Kristina has done an amazing job with this story. I received a copy of this book an exchanged for an honest review. ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL!! The title through me off cause I read nothing about what the book was about just agreed to read it so I was left trying to figure out what Kristina's story was that she was telling. I hadn't even seen the cover. Well the cover is beautiful and really makes you wonder what it is about. Evangeline a broken teenager no longer feeling loved at home gets sent to Second Hides Program at Kindred Hides Wildlife Preserve. With holding secrets and putting up a wall she wants no one to break down. This book brought out a lot of emotions so have some tissues handy. One when Evangeline meets PJ declaring when standing on his rock that "She is the goat goddess" Talk about laughing. To read her get a knee checked by a pygmy goat I was laughing my butt off. Love Evangeline connection with Ruke. Ruke a heartbroken giraffe and Evangeline heartbroken both can connect. I just have to say that I recommend this book to YA and adults. I found this book well written,Kristina knows how to pull an audience in and how to keep their attention. How could you NOT like this book. I mean my heart broke from Evangeline,Ruke and PJ and I am so glad for the program that mended a couple broken hearts.
