Description: This workbook is a companion to Fundamentals of Anatomy and Physiology for Nursing and Healthcare Students, 2nd edition, Peate and Nair (Wiley-Blackwell, 2017).
Purpose: The purpose is to "make learning much easier" using a systems approach in identifying component parts of the human body as well as in memorization and recall of important anatomical features.
Audience: The author intends this study guide for nursing and healthcare students. It is appropriate for undergraduate students, even high school students, in anatomy classes. The author, the Head of School of Health Studies, Gibraltar, is well qualified, with a full professorship, as well as publishing over 25 books and serving as editor in chief of the British Journal of Nursing.
Features: As a pathophysiology instructor, I appreciate the systems approach as well as tables of prefixes and suffixes for students (including meaning and examples). The book starts with basic physiology, genetics, and cell and tissue biology prior to expanding into systems. This is a good foundation for students, who need to understand the different systems of the body. The order of the body systems is somewhat confusing, and it is unclear if this is random or if there is reason for the order. The book starts with skeletal, then muscular and circulation, followed by GI, renal, and respiratory. Starting with endocrine would make more sense, as it really does have influence over all systems and starting with endocrine helps students understand the other systems. From there, the logical progression would be with the most important systems of cardiac, respiratory, and nervous systems. The many exercises in the workbook are excellent, including identification of parts of each system, or regarding function. However, the word search or word scramble exercises are busy work with little intrinsic learning. The crossword puzzles are fun and interesting. Of note, all answers can be found at the end of the book so students can check their work.
Assessment: I have only used a few workbooks in the past for anatomy and physiology, and the one that is used most is the Anatomy and Physiology Coloring Workbook: A Complete Study Guide, 12th edition, Marieb (Pearson, 2018). This new workbook is far more useful because it has many more exercises for students. This workbook is also better than using flashcards, such as Anatomy and Physiology Flash Cards (Scientific Publishing 2011), again because of the learning activities and exercises.
