About the Author

David E. Beck, MD, FACS, a Clinical Professor of Surgery at the F. Edward Herbert School of Medicine in Bethesda and the Chairman, Department of Colon and Rectal Surgery at the Ochsner Clinic Foundation; New Orleans. A well published author of many journal abstracts and articles, Dr. Beck has written many Textbooks on Colorectal Surgery and has contributed chapters to several others. His extensive editorial activities currently include being an Editorial Board Member of Current Surgery, a reviewer of Diseases of the Colon and Rectum and Editor in Chief of Clinics in Colon and Rectal Surgery.

Scott R. Steele, MD is a practicing Colorectal Surgeon in Cleveland, OH. Dr. Steele graduated from University of Wisconsin School of Medicine & Public Health in 1997 and has been in practice for 20 years. Dr. Steele accepts multiple insurance plans including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Medical Mutual of Ohio. Dr. Steele also practices at The Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, OH. In addition to English, Dr. Steele's practice supports these languages: Russian, Spanish, Arabic, French and German.

This book describes the anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of both benign and malignant anorectal diseases. The purpose is to provide expanded emphasis on diseases of the anorectum, up to the level of the sacral promontory. The contributors are from many different institutions, imparting a diversity of knowledge and expertise to a single text. The editors' aim is to give practicing surgeons, fellows, and residents a concise book regarding benign and malignant anorectal diseases. The book meets their objectives. This is a second edition, and many improvements have been made since the first edition. This book is updated and much more readable. There are six new chapters; in particular the addition of chapters on ""Minimally Invasive Anorectal Surgery"" and ""Nursing Corsiderations"" enhances this edition. There is also a good deal of information on HIV disease and its impact on the anorectum. Throughout the text there are many excellent line drawings. The black-and-white photos of pathologic conditions do not impart as much information as color would, but this is minor. This is a well written, easy to read book that fulfills its objective of focusing on anorectal diseases. This book would be an important addition to any general surgeon's library.
