Description: This book serves as an introductory text for radiology residents. It superficially covers a wide range of material, primarily focused on radiographic findings, with an abbreviated introduction to MRI at the end of the text. The book is accompanied by an online ebook mirroring the printed book without additional videos or text. The fourth edition was published in 2014.
Purpose: The purpose is to introduce the basics of musculoskeletal (MSK) radiology and present common pathology in a memorable and readable fashion. This book meets its objectives and serves as the primary resource for many first MSK rotations. It offers a starting point for differential diagnosis, supported by many excellent cases throughout the text. The ebook is easy to navigate and easily accessible from any device, an increasingly desirable feature.
Audience: This book is intended and appropriately written for new radiology residents. It provides the framework for an approach to common pathology, reserving in-depth pathophysiology and more uncommon diagnosis for other resources. The author is a recognized expert in MSK radiology, a professor of radiology and orthopedic Surgery, and an author of numerous articles and books.
Features: The book introduces pathology related to trauma, tumors, inflammation, and systemic disorders in a well-organized fashion, correlating them primarily with their unique radiologic findings. The writing style is more casual, making the book approachable and easy to digest. The brief introduction to MRI describes common pathology in large joints. A separate chapter on MRI findings of soft tissue tumors may provide a valuable addition, as most residents in academic settings will commonly encounter these on their rotations. Visually, the layout of the tables can be confusing. The dual column design for lists saves space on the page but reads as though those next to each other are uniquely related. This is particularly true in the written text, where the rows are alternating shades of blue. Ideally, these tables should be single column. There are also terms that should be updated in this edition. "Reiter's arthritis" should be updated to "Reactive arthritis." Additionally, "malignant fibrous histiocytoma" should be updated to "undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma" in the chapter on malignant tumors.
Assessment: This book is a valuable resource for residents that presents an easy-to-digest, consolidated overview of common pathology they will encounter on their first rotation. A similar resource is Musculoskeletal Imaging: The Requisites, 4th edition, Manaster (Elsevier, 2013), but it covers a wider range of pathology and imaging correlates and is twice as long as the book under review. This book is uniquely approachable to a new radiology resident and a valuable resource, warranting appropriate updating and online availability.

This is the second edition of an introductory text devoted to skeletal radiology that was well received by diagnostic radiology residents in its first edition. It is written in a casual, individualistic style by a noted authority in the field. The work is expanded and brought up-to-date by the addition of 65 pages devoted to MRI, comprising 25% of the text. The book certainly fulfills its intended purpose as an introductory text. The book is targeted for radiology residents and interested medical students. The text is short, compact, and written in a casual, personal style. It is well illustrated. The major imaging findings in all important skeletal diseases are depicted. All imaging techniques are included; plain films, bone scans, CT, and MRI. The second edition will likely be even more highly regarded than the first edition because of the addition of a significant section devoted to MRI. This, when coupled with the low cost, will make it attractive to both diagnostic radiology residents and medical students. The book should do well.
