Description: This discussion of special procedures in radiology provides a detailed description of procedures and has considerable content. The third edition was published in 1992.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a complete discussion of all types of special procedure radiographic exams, covering most older, established procedures and some newer procedures. The objectives are very worthy but are never met due to the obsolete nature of the chapter content and radiographs, and lack of complete information of many interventional procedures. Older, more obsolete subjects are accorded whole chapter attention, while established interventional procedures get only a small portion of a chapter.
Audience: The audience consists of technologists new to the area of special procedures and technologists preparing to sit for the ARRT cardiovascular interventions technology examination. Another audience consists of radiography students learning about these procedures as part of their training.
Features: The content consists of detailed descriptions of many different special procedures and a minor description of some very important interventional procedures. Special modality procedures (i.e., NM, CT) are also covered. Sections III, IV, and V provide excellent descriptions of established angiographic procedures. This continues to be the standard for teaching these procedures. Chapters and subjects that are obsolete or little used are still major portions of this textbook. While this textbook was the "bible" for technologists years ago, it has not kept up with the changes in a way that is needed to inform the target audience. Entire textbooks about interventional radiology have been published while this author devotes only a short chapter and a few paragraphs to this subject. Pedagogic value of radiographs is lower, as these are the same ones used in 1984.
Assessment: I do not believe this text provides the most current material on interventional radiologic procedures. While it may provide helpful information for smaller cath labs, larger labs that are performing more interventional procedures may not find enough information here. There are several other books in print that may provide more information. Because special procedure labs are performing more interventional exams than diagnostic procedures, perhaps this handbook could have covered the interventional aspect more in depth.
