Description: This is an all-encompassing review of the topics covered on the general pediatrics board examination. There are 26 total chapters, 25 of which cover a subspecialty and have between 20 and 100 questions, the largest of the chapters falling under "preventive general pediatrics." The questions are case-based multiple choice questions, and thorough answers are provided at the end of each chapter. Also provided in the answers section of each chapter are graphs, charts, and pictures, when appropriate, to clarify or further explain the question's subject.
Purpose: The purpose is to offer a case-based comprehensive review for the pediatric boards, aimed at the education of pediatric trainees. There are several resources for pediatric trainees for this exact purpose, but not many that are as comprehensive or that have detailed subspecialty-based answers in one collective text. The case-based questions are board-style questions that not only prepare readers for the board exam, but also provide general education while progressing through pediatric training. By presenting this material in print, readers can go through chapters in sequence or focus on subspecialties that they want to learn more about. It also allows each reader to return to previous questions they may have missed or want to re-read without having to search through online questions.
Audience: This board review book is primarily written for pediatric residents for board preparation. It targets the pediatric subspecialties that are questioned on the board exams, including but not limited to: preventive general pediatrics, neonatal medicine, adolescent medicine, child abuse, infectious diseases, oncology, hematology, cardiology, pulmonology, and critical care medicine. By providing multiple choice case-based questions, this book meets the needs for board preparation review, as described by the authors. The primary author, Dr. Yazdani, focuses some of his research on medical education, although most of his publications are related to chronic complex care and palliative care. Each individual chapter is authored by experts in that particular subspecialty, and recent references are provided at the end of each chapter for further reading.
Features: This review book covers each subspecialty tested on the pediatric boards in a comprehensive way. Each question is case based to mirror the style of questioning on the pediatric board exam and, thus, prepare readers for taking tests in that particular format. The answer review sections for each chapter provide adequate rationale for each question, and often point to various charts or graphs that expand on the particular topic covered in the question. This is one of the book's strengths, in that more comprehensive overview is often provided in chart format to allow for easier studying. There are occasional pictures provided, mainly in the form of skin rashes in the "infectious diseases" and "dermatology" chapters, but also with images of EKGs, x-rays, and other radiologic images. The most comprehensive chapter is the first, on preventive general pediatrics. This is very appropriate for a board review book, as the largest portion of the pediatric board examination is focused on general pediatrics. The answer section for this chapter provides several charts to compare and contrast infant/child developmental milestones, which are very helpful for quick reviewing. Also helpful is the chapter on research methods and statistics — an important part of the board examination that is often forgotten about and not focused on heavily during pediatric training. Finally, the last chapter consists of "quick facts" related to every subspecialty, which allow readers to review the most important pearls. This book is available entirely online as well, including all the graphics, at oxfordmedicine.com. I was unable to find the token to access the online content, and therefore cannot fully review the website resources.
Assessment: This book is a great additional resource for pediatric trainees for the purpose of board preparation. The quality of the questions is similar to the American Academy of Pediatrics' online PREP materials, which is the resource I have primarily used thus far for my board preparation. I often find the answer rationale for the AAP PREP questions to be lengthy and difficult to get through, so the charts and graphs available in this book are of definite benefit. The other benefit of having a full text of course, is the ability to highlight and annotate in the textbook, as well as bookmark which questions I would like to review in the future, which is difficult with the online PREP questions.
