Overview

Inspired by true events, Generations follows a working-class African-American family, 'The Roberts', based in Philadelphia, PA, from 1946 to 1974. It centers around the main character, Emma.

This narrative, part one of a two-part story, takes you on an emotional roller coaster. As Emma tries to make sense of the family's dynamics, she often finds herself the outcast.

The story deals with sorrow, happiness, triumphs, racism, alcoholism, substance abuse, wealth, and how to raise a family with togetherness through adversity. Bear witness to Emma's trials and tribulations as she deals with a tumultuous relationship with her mother and older sister, Bell, while striving to carve out a family of her own.

About the Author

Tammy was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is the youngest of fifteen siblings, born to Edna Robinson-West and John West in 1966.
Tammy always found writing therapeutic and kept a diary or journal growing up. Tammy always loved when her mother, the family's matriarch, would have her and her siblings sitting around her as she told the family stories. The stories her mother would tell about the generation were always fascinating to her. Her mother would share the family stories with them time and time again until we could state them from memory. She always had what some would call ‘The gift of gab!’ Her mother would encourage her gift for storytelling. While watching movies together, she always imposed an alternative solution if they didn’t like the final cut.
Her father passed away when she was only eight. That drew her closer to her mother as she reached adulthood. Her mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2007. Her final months were spent with Tammy, her husband, and her daughter as she endured hospice care. The rest of her siblings and family visited her every day there. During this time, she reiterated the family stories that she loved to tell. That period in Tammy’s life forever changed her. Whenever she shared her family’s stories, people often said, “This could be a movie.” So, she figured she’d try her hand at a book, and here we are. She has been married to the love of her life for 34 years. She has an amazing daughter who makes her proud every day. Her sisters are her best friends. Her brothers are her fierce protectors and friends.
So, she woke up last summer and asked herself two questions. ‘If not you…who?’ ‘If not now…...when?’ So, here’s her baby. She hopes you all enjoy reading it!
