About the Author

Jane K. Setlow, PhD. has championed the field of genetics for over 30 years, agreeing to edit Genetic Engineering: Principles & Methods since its inception in 1979. An internationally recognized scientist with numerous publications, Dr. Setlow is the former Chairperson of the NIH Recombinant DNA Molecule Advisory Committee (RAC). Her lab can found at Brookhaven National Laboratory, Upton, New York.

This is the 17th edition of an annual volume of contributed papers in various areas of genetic engineering. It is intended to present up-to-date information in the field. This volume will be of interest to investigators interested in genetic manipulation and engineering and would also be of value to library collections. The individual contributions are well illustrated and include extensive pertinent references. Both eukaryotic and prokaryotic organisms are included. The 13 entries in this volume include coverage of DNA excision and repair, bacterial virulence genes, metal binding proteins, RNA tertiary structure, expression systems, toxins, and genetic exchanges between plant cells and bacteria. Several of the entries deal heavily with technical developments. This annual series of reviews is strong on technique.

The 1995 edition of the annual collection contains 13 papers on such topics as the molecular biology of nucleotide exicision repair and double-strand break repair in eukaryotes, the role of molecular chaperones in the initiation of plasmid DNA replication, the genetics of nuclear migration in fungi, and the potential for biotechnological applications of metal precipitation by marine bacteria.
