It is not permissible to compare these ghazals with the great works of poetry of their time, as the decision of these works of art of their time has been in the hands of individual talent as well as circumstances and time. The different number of poems selected by different poets depends on the choice of the compiler rather than on any preferential basis.

اس کتاب میں اردو غزل کے آغاز کے زمانے کا ایک انتخاب جو پیش کیا گیا ہے وہ ان کے عصر کے حوالے سے ہے۔ ان غزلوں کے شاعر اپنے اپنے عہد میں اساتذہ کا درجہ رکھتے تھے۔ لہذا یہ اپنے عہد کی سوچ کو حرف کا پیکر عطا کرنے والوں کے سفر کی روداد ہے۔ ان غزلوں کا تقابل شاعری کے اعلیٰ فن پاروں سے جائز بھی نہیں ہے کہ اپنے وقت کے ان فن پاروں کا فیصلہ انفرادی صلاحیت کے ساتھ ساتھ حالات اور وقت کے ہاتھ میں رہا ہے۔ مختلف شعرا کے منتخب اشعار کی مختلف تعداد کسی ترجیحی بنیاد کے بجائے مرتب کے انتخاب پر منحصر ہے۔
