Ghosts of Martha's Vineyard
Martha’s Vineyard has always been known as a charming seaside destination. But on this island, a cautious tour reveals darker tales that lie beneath its familiar exterior. Walk by the House of Correction, where Old Joe patrols the cells in the afterlife. Savor spirits at the Kelley House, where the ghost of the widow of a whaleman rolls Christmas ornaments across the floor and appears by the fireplace. Meander into the Victorian Inn, now The Christopher, where a honeymooning couple was spooked by towels flung on the floor and a rug that wiggled from beneath their four-poster. Local author and historian Thomas Dresser explores haunted happenings from all six island towns, as well as tales of pirates, murder and the afterlife.

About the Author

All his life, Thomas Dresser understood the hard facts and definitive words of history; he never saw a ghost and didn’t believe until he sat down to write this book. Interviews and research indicate that something is out there. Now he is a believer. Tom grew up in central Massachusetts and moved to Martha’s Vineyard in the ’90s to be with his childhood friend Joyce. Married more than twenty years, they are very involved with five children and nine grandchildren. Their lives are full. Living on Martha’s Vineyard has given Tom a better grasp of the value a tranquil environment has on peace of mind. Living in a harmonious relationship has given Tom the opportunity to blossom in retirement. Together, Tom and Joyce have carved out a lifestyle neither suspected when they first met in Holden Junior High in the late 1950s. Sometimes life hands you a bag of coal; sometimes it’s a bag of hope.
