About the Author

Mary Robinson is president of Realizing Rights: The Ethical Globalization Initiative. She previously served as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and was president of Ireland from 1990 to 1997.

William Novelli is chief executive officer of AARP, a membership organization of 38 million people age 50 and older. Previously, he was president of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids and executive vice president of CARE.

Clarence Pearson is a global health leadership and management consultant and former senior advisor to World Health Organization at the United Nations. He conceived the series of global health books for Jossey-Bass and serves as the series' executive editor.

Laurie Norris is an international communications consultant and author of a history of the China Medical Board, a pioneer in Western-style medical education in China and Asia. She serves as managing editor for the global health series published by Jossey-Bass.

Description: This is a multiauthored book about the health of the world's aging population and how our understanding of the nature of aging should influence policies and priorities around the world.
Purpose: Its purpose is to review the state of knowledge of aging populations around the world and to consider how knowledge of aging impacts decisions about future developments. These are all worthy objectives and well fulfilled all around.
Audience: The audience is very broad — researchers, practitioners, planners, and governmental and nongovernmental organizations with an interest in the aging population of the world. The authors are leading experts from throughout the world.
Features: The first of the book's five parts surveys world organizations' views on the health of older persons. The second part reviews countries with the highest longevities, while the third part is a discussion of countries whose increase in older persons is projected to be rapid. A summary of the research and innovation in caring for older persons makes up the fourth part. The last part is a look towards the future.
Assessment: This book, commissioned by the AARP Foundation, is part of a series on global health. There is a truly international contribution of thought. This is a genuine and sincere attempt to bring current knowledge of aging and aging populations to bear on broad policies throughout the world. In a world where competition is the watchword, the efforts at collaboration evidenced by this book are remarkable and it is worth reading by a large audience.
