About the Author

ADDIE BOSWELL is a writer, artist, and muralist who lives in Portland, Oregon. Addie's first book, The Rain Stomper (Two Lions, 2008) won the 2009 Oregon Spirit Award. She was also included in Oregon Reads Aloud, a 2017 collection of the state's top authors and illustrators.

ALEXANDER MOSTOV is an illustrator who takes pride in making playful, accessible pictures. His inspiration is drawn from plants, animals, and midcentury modern design. He lives in Seattle with lots of books and a mischievous little dog named Dziga.

PreS-Gr 2This book is all about different types of boats, and they are illustrated in many sizes, colors, and shapes. The repetition of the word "boats" adds a soothing balance to the text. Boats can be seen serving different functions. The illustrations are drawn in a folk art style, and bright colors add a joyful feel to this story. Readers could easily notice something new and unique happening on the page every time they view the images. Lines are often used to depict the different flows of water; fast-moving water is represented with curvy lines, while water with a more static flow is illustrated with straighter lines. The viewpoint of scenery shifts often throughout this story, and the text in this book often appears to trail alongside different boats. Animals also make playful appearances throughout. VERDICT This book is a great way to introduce young children to the many functions and uses of boats.—Deanna Smith, Pender County Public Library, NC

A cavalcade of boats both realistic and whimsical.

“Old boats. New boats. / One-or-two boats. // Tall boats. Small boats. / Heave-and-haul boats.” So begins Boswell’s playful, rhythmic, and compact text. Mostov’s illustrations, which are graphically simple and pleasingly two-dimensional in dark and bold colors, depict a wide range of floating apparatuses, mostly in profile. There are human-powered boats, such as kayaks, a dinghy, and pedal-powered boats, and nature- and machine-powered vehicles, such as a few types of sailboats, submarines, a motorboat, and an airboat. As the text goes on, they grow quite fanciful and include a sailboat carried aloft by balloons and sea-horse– and flamingo-shaped vessels. Seemingly in order to cram in as many as possible, some of the pages cut the boats off in unsatisfying ways, and boat-obsessed toddlers may be disappointed they don’t see a full image of a shipwreck or a container ship. Although there’s a clichéd white, bearded sea captain with a bird on the shoulder, a diverse group of folks pilot these crafts and include multiracial crews on several boats and a brown-skinned family clad in modern gear and paddling a traditional-looking canoe.
