This book is a book of Bible stories, and also little snippets to help you along the way. I like that it’s a combination of a devotional (the little snippets) and the Bible.
GOD’S BIG PLANS FOR ME, STORYBOOK BIBLE was sent to me by Zonderkidz (A division of Zondervan Publishing), free of charge, in exchange for my honest review. This storybook was written by Rick Warren, and based on his well-read book, THE PURPOSE DRIVEN LIFE. I’m not sure who to credit with the illustrations. But, they are gorgeous!! I like how Pastor Warren even set this up to be read a day at a time…40 days, as in the adult version. Each daily reading has several sections. First, he gives a little devotion. Then, he has a fully illustrated story (like Adam and Eve). Then, and I really like this, he includes a section called, IT ALL STARTS WITH GOD. In this section, he includes THINK, a short sentence to ponder, that has to do with the story. The one with THE CREATION is, “God has an important plan for everything he created.” REMEMBER is a memory verse for that day. And, QUESTION asks a question for the child to think about and answer. The one for RUTH AND NAOMI is, “How can you show people that you love them?” He finishes the 40 day journey with FOREVER HOME, when John got a glimpse of Heaven. I’m thinking my first and second grade grandsons would love this! I would recommend it for upper elementary to lower middle school, who read on their own…and, parents, grandparents, teachers, librarians…anyone who loves to read to even the tiniest children (They will love the pretty pictures).
“What can you ask God for to help you tell other people about him?” asks the question at the end of the story about King Solomon in Rick Warren’s book for children, God’s Big Plans for Me Storybook Bible. ~ What ~ This numbered two-hundred-twenty-four-page hardbound targets children four to eight-years-old looking for a book of stories from the Bible. Using the New International Reader’s Version of the Holy Bible, it has a presentation page, dedication, introduction, table of contents, and forty stories with full-colored, detailed illustrations. With some frightening and scary situations, some young children should be cautioned. It would best be read out loud to beginner readers due to some of the complicated three syllable words. With eighteen stories from the Old Testament and twenty-two from the New Testament, each story is four to eight pages long. Beginning with a few paragraphs how the story can be applied to the reader, it follows with the Biblical story and ends with a short Think, Remember, and Question to consider. The stories range from Creation, Noah, Moses, Ruth, David, and Daniel to Jesus’s birth, life, death, and resurrection. ~ Why ~ Every child should know stories of the Bible, and I liked how this one covers the gambit of them. I appreciate the added ending statements to ponder. With each story being short and to the point, many good ones are added. Although a complicated topic to explain to young ones, Jesus dying on the cross and rising the third day is included. ~ Why Not ~ Those who do not believe in God may not be interested a book of Bible stories. Others may be concerned that the shortened stories do not exactly retell those in the Word of God as liberties are taken (example: there is no mention of sin and the prayer of salvation never states Jesus dying for our sins). Young children may be frightened of the depiction of a fiery furnace and a silhouette of Christ on the cross. ~ Wish ~ The book skirts over the main issue of true salvation that Jesus has paid it all and that all we have to do is confess our sins and ask Him to save us. I wish it did not state on Page 181 “God knows I’m not perfect, yet he still wants me to help him” as it is not about what we do but what Christ does. Having all pronouns of God capitalized for reverence would be thoughtful. ~ Want ~ If you are looking for a children’s book that includes many shortened stories of the Holy Bible with engaging illustrations and thoughts to ponder, this is a good choice, but I did not like that it does not accurately explain the eternal plan of salvation. Thanks to Z Blog Squad for this complimentary book that I am under no obligation to review.
