Description: Grant's Atlas is the ultimate in dissection assistance. Its original carbon dust images were converted into a vibrant new palette in the last edition. The majority of the original images were done from actual dissections and the number of labels per image are at a student-friendly minimum, helping to keep the focus on what is being dissected and their relationships. This edition continues these unique attributes and enhances others. The website consists mainly of Acland's dissection videos, the resolution of which is of dubious quality.
Purpose: This atlas, coupled with Grant's Dissector, 17th edition, Detton (Wolters Kluwer, 2021) (or custom written departmental dissectors) is the true student dissector's reference. This meticulously updated edition is a visually stunning reference that delivers the accuracy, pedagogy, and clinical relevance expected of this classic atlas, with new and enhanced features that make it even more practical and user-friendly.
Audience: This atlas is designed for any first-year health science student groups where dissection is required. Its student-friendly number of labels per diagram enhance the focus of each region dissected yet relay the important clinical relationships of each area dissected. There are many other atlases, but none offer this reduction of label clarity, instead of causing information overload in curricula where detail is being reduced. The authors are expert anatomists, formidable teachers, talented laboratory dissectionists, and this focus shows in the careful development of the atlas over time.
Features: The schematic images have been updated to a modern style and consistent color palette to supplement the dissection figures, clarifying anatomical concepts and relationships. New clinical comments to reflect current practices have been added to the figure legends. Over 100 clinically significant MRI, CT, and ultrasound images have been added to the end of each chapter, reflecting the importance of these techniques in current diagnosis. Tables have been updated and improved for clarity. The order of presentation in the atlas is matched to Grant's Dissector for ease of student use.
Assessment: Grant's Atlas continues its forward development to become the ultimate guide to effective student dissection. The clinical pearls in the figure legends, often ignored, are of huge benefit to clinical correlations. The current reduction in anatomy content in curricula nationwide is least impactive in this book due to the reduction of labels to promote student focus on the important structures and relationships in the dissection.
