Free Gruber was a courier for the Massachusetts Militia, and then for the Continental Army. Alice Whitmer was a spy for the Militia. They first met through their war activities. After the Revolutionary War they married and headed out west to claim the land that was their pay for services. Ohio was still a territory. After Ohio became a state they were involved in the war of 1812. At the conclusion of this war, their widowed daughter in law married and left for new territory.
