About the Author

Cecily L. Betz, PhD, RN, FAAN, is professor of clinical pediatrics in the University of Southern California (USC) Keck School of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics. Dr. Betz serves as the nursing director and research director of the USC University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA).

Marilyn J. Krajicek, EdD, RN, FAAN, is professor of nursing at University of Colorado College of Nursing Anschutz Medical Center and associate clinical professor, Department of Pediatrics, School of Medicine.

Martha Craft-Rosenberg, PhD, RN, FAAN, is professor emeritus at the University of Iowa College of Nursing.

Description: This collection of guidelines for pediatric care is unique in that it compiles 17 elements from multiple organizations and experts in child health. The book is endorsed by leaders from key organizations managing child health. This edition includes an ebook version, but I was unable to access the website.
Purpose: The purpose is to disseminate the core or gold standards in the care of children, youth, and families. (I would revise some to use consistent terms — e.g. youth vs. adolescent). Each chapter (or core element) incorporates evidence-based practice standards. Multiple references are included throughout.
Audience: It is designed as a reference for all nurses caring for the child and family. It would be especially helpful for pediatric nurses, advanced practice nurses, or nurses providing care in primary or acute care clinical sites. The authors state the book may be useful for those in other health disciplines (e.g., child life, PT, OT, MD, etc.). It should be viewed as a gold-standard book for any discipline managing children and families. (This may also include schools.) Highly credible authors, Drs. Betz and Krajicek, plus expert Dr. Craft-Rosenberg, bring together nursing clinical experts from across the U.S. as authors of the chapters.
Features: Care of the child, youth, and family is multifaceted and requires much discussion and education. This book provides guidelines for nursing excellence and disseminates shared understanding for nursing excellence. Most impressive are the expert/experienced authors. At first glance some chapters are weaker than others. There is greater emphasis on youth with less on children and families, and the references are also geared towards youth. Figures, photographs, and imaging photos provide detailed descriptions of the complex neurological conditions specific to the pediatric patient.
Assessment: This book offers significant guidance, and I am unaware of a book with a similar focus. I have educated nursing students for 16 years, and this is the first book on child, youth, and family guidelines that I have reviewed.
