Description: This user-friendly dermatology book is loaded with excellent color photographs and insightful captions describing the clinical findings. It contains many tables that alert readers to the differences among diagnostic tests, drug comparisons, and accompanying dosages recommended for a given entity; lists of differential diagnoses for lesions that may appear clinically similar; and workup summaries for suspected diseases. This is a seventh edition with the previous edition published 2016. The latest edition includes new therapies and diseases such as Zika virus and Ebola. The book can also be accessed electronically.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an easily accessible, informative dermatologic resource for dermatologists and dermatology residents. The author has done a superb job accomplishing this goal, and additional photographs are included online.
Audience: The audience is dermatologists and dermatology residents.
Features: This book has always been renowned for its exquisite medical photography as the eponymous author was a skilled photographer. The pages brilliantly present algorithms containing diagnostic branching points, history taking, and management. Indispensable tables summarize categories of medications for a specific disease, mechanisms of action, doses, clinical precautions, and contraindications. I plan to bookmark these pages for referencing.
Assessment: Dr. Habif's books hold a special place in my heart. His clinical dermatology book entitled Skin Disease: Diagnosis and Treatment, Habif et al. (Elsevier, 2018), now in its fourth edition, was one of my first purchases on the advice of a friend. After that, I was hooked! It is obvious this comprehensive, thoughtful book was written by a master clinician who loved dermatology. I am glad to see the torch has been passed to someone who values sharing his incredible wealth of knowledge.
