About the Author

Sir Michael Berry is the Melville Wills Professor of Physics (Emeritus) at Bristol University where he has been for twice as long as he has not. Elected a fellow of the Royal Society of London in 1982 and knighted in 1996, Sir Michael has enjoyed a long and illustrious career in physics, winning many of the most prestigious awards in the field. These include the Paul Dirac Medals in 1990 and 1996, the Wolf Prize in Physics in 1998 and the Lorentz Medal in 2015. Specialising in asymptotic physics and quantum chaos, he is associated with the Berry phase, a concept applicable to a number of areas, including quantum mechanics, optics and condensed-matter physics.
