Overview

Behavioral medicine emerged in the 1970s as the interdisciplinary field concerned with the integration of behavioral, psychosocial, and biomedical science knowledge relevant to the understanding of health and illness, and the application of this knowledge to prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation. Recent years have witnessed an enormous diversification of behavioral medicine, with new sciences (such as genetics, life course epidemiology) and new technologies (such as neuroimaging) coming into play. This book brings together such new developments by providing an up-to-date compendium of methods and applications drawn from the broad range of behavioral medicine research and practice. The book is divided into 10 sections that address key fields in behavioral medicine. Each section begins with one or two methodological or conceptual chapters, followed by contributions that address substantive topics within that field. Major health problems such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, HIV/AIDs, and obesity are explored from multiple perspectives. The aim is to present behavioral medicine as an integrative discipline, involving diverse methodologies and paradigms that converge on health and well being.

About the Author

Andrew Steptoe is professor of psychology in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at University College London. He has worked in behavioral medicine throughout his professional life and is a Past-President of both the International Society of Behavioral Medicine and the Society for Psychosomatic Research. He is a member of Academy of Behavioral Medicine Research and Fellow of the Society of Behavioral Medicine. He was founding co-editor of the British Journal of Health Psychology. He is author and editor of 16 books including Health Care and Human Behaviour (1984), Stress, Personal Control and Health (1989), Psychosocial Processes and Health (1994) and Depression and Physical Illness (2006). He has published more than 400 journal articles and book chapters.

Description: Behavioral medicine is a field in its relative infancy with growing recognition, continually exploring both its place and its role in healthcare. This book tackles the enormous, and perhaps daunting, task of bringing the collective wisdom of the field over the last 40 years to a single book.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a definitive resource in the field of behavioral medicine with historical perspectives, cutting-edge findings, and future directions.
Audience: This book is squarely targeted at anyone involved in the delivery of behavioral medicine services, which includes both experienced practitioners and students of related disciplines. The editors are highly knowledgeable and have gathered an international, multidisciplinary team of contributing authors that range from full professors to graduate students.
Features: At over 1,000 pages and 65 chapters in 10 sections, this is a hefty tome. These sections cover the gamut of topics from psychological assessment to genetic studies to epidemiology. Within each section, the chapters break down the topic into more manageable portions. For example, the first section on measurement in health details the assessment of cognitive determinants of health behavior, diet, physical activity, sexual behavior, habits, and adherence to medical regimens in separate chapters. This segues seamlessly into discussion of statistical issues and models, which is followed by a thorough review of studies at the heart of behavioral medicine. For example, there are well-designed studies describing expectations, social influences, and stress on the perception of symptoms and illness that clearly demonstrate the theories. A comprehensive expounding on this book is beyond the scope of this review, but it should be sufficient to note that subsequent chapters continue this excellent trend. Readers with widely varied interests will find something of value here, whether it be qualitative sociological investigations or bench science from genetics. Each chapter is well organized and easy to access, and the material is written at an appropriate level so that readers can understand the content without needing years of expertise in a particular subfield of behavioral medicine. The references are current, but also encompass a range of studies over the last few decades to appropriately provide a foundation and historical context. The only gripe I have with this book in any major respect is the quality of the figures and illustrations. Where this is true throughout the book, the neuroimaging and related topics suffer the most. The addition of color plates or even higher resolution/better contrast images would have been appreciated, and, given the reasonable cost of this book at under $100, a slightly higher price may have been justified.
Assessment: The editors and contributing authors have admirably assembled a definitive reference in behavioral medicine that is far more comprehensive than anything on the market today. It would be difficult to justify one's existence as a behavioral medicine specialist without this in one's professional library.
